    Trek movie theory

    Just a theory:

Between comments by people like Kevin Smith, who have seen the movie, and the recent articles, theres enough of the story leaked out by now to postulate a theory on how this all goes down.

I figure the Romulans arent going back into time to kill Kirk...I think they are going after Spock. Why, because he was also at every significant Romulan encounter Kirk was, plus he lived long enough to end a Romulan invasion of the Federation in Picards era, and was constantly working towards a reunification of the Vulcan and Romulan peoples. Spock would definately make the more logical target.

I believe Nimoy/Spock may already be dead, or near dead in the TNG era (where the film starts) and while in a near comatose state, telepathically contacts James T. Kirk in the past to warn him about the danger to Spock. Kirk unites a crew(most of whom he doesnt know yet) under Old Spocks guidance ...explaining why all the old gang are together in the pre- 5 year mission era.
This ties in with Kevin Smiths statements, and explains why the crew seems at odds with Kirk in most of the released pictures so far....Kirk cant tell them why they are being forced together, nor why they should naturally follow his command...he is just a cadet. (Hence the black shirt).

Somewhere along the line new Spocko mind melds with Kirk (possibly after he is pictured choking him) and meets his old self.

By interferring with the past, Old spock has changed the future (freeing the writers up from being locked into Trek canon on future pictures) but has saved himself and the Federation.

I know it sounds kind of selfish saving himself, but from what I can see, Kirk is driving the action of the film, thus it makes sense in my mind, he is the one in contact with Nimoys Spock.

    Arguments....other theories....?

If that is it, it's pretty cool. I also heard theories that somehow the time travel plot to kill Kirk creates a similar but alternate timeline (kind of Post-Crisis or Ultimate, if you will), thus giving us new adventures of the old crew that won't contradict the original series, and the movies can lift and adapt old storylines as needed.

      Hmmmm....

About a year ago I heard something like that, so I'd suspect you're pretty close. Plus, it'd tie into the animated series they were doing. Supposedly the Romulans and the Federation went to war and the Romulans used some sort of super weapon that messes up warp space.... and possibly time too? It'd put an end to them 29th century time travelling guys.

I'd watch Captain's version, sounds like a good movie.

I'll chime in on this thread here....

...what's interesting about this hypothesized approach is that
it does indeed reconfigure the Trek universe events---reminds me
of Superman Returns in it's proactive attempt to link two totally different
versions of the franchises (albeit in different ways)...ya gotta respect that
            kind of moxie.

And you would think the oldtimers would give a crap about something
that reeked so much of respect to the old guard regardless of
            other concerns.

            I mean...it's not a perfect world...but it's still a significant move IF
this is indeed the plotline---even if it isn't---it'll be somewhat close
as Nimoy IS in it after all.

couple problems I see with that theory....mainly to due with the age of the characters. Chekov was only in his early twenties when he joined the crew....Kirk was in his mid thirties at that point. So how would Kirk still be a cadet and Chekov is wearing a gold crew shirt. Same with Uhura and Sulu, who although older then Chekov are still younger than Kirk.
Gotta admit I am really looking forward to this movie though. Can't remember the last time I was excited about Star Trek, except maybe for the EMCE repro's.
