I feel the same way you do T1K. I've found a way around it though. Any Trek beyond the original series, animated series, and first six movies I dont include in my "real" Trek universe.
TNG and the rest happen in an alternate Trek reality (like DC's Earth one and two). This way, no matter how much they screw things up and around, it doesnt affect my interpretation of Classic (or Real) Star Trek. As far as I'm concerned this new movie series is completely seperate from the original series. The differences in continuity do bug me, but in the end...alternate universe...no big whoop.
Shatner, Nimoy, et al, and the universe they built stands far and above....and unaffected anything done nowadays.

In most of the new shows I've found myself a bigger fan of, and more interested by, the technology, rather than the characters anyways. I'm not talking the techno babble crap, but the ship designs, console lay outs, etc....For me, an all new, original bridge design is way more interesting than the cast.....although I hope they do pull this off with some dignity and honor and respect what has come before. Most remakes miss that last part (like Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky and Hutch, etc.)

It's all kinda weird maybe, but it works for me.

On the plus side, at least it’s not as basterdized as other recently re-imagined classic sci-fi shows.

I half expected them to change the genders and races of the characters around, have the Phasers shoot bullets, not have Spock have pointed ears or even be an alien because it wouldn’t be “edgy” or “realistic” enough for today’s modern audience.

Not to mention having Alexander Courage’s iconic Trek theme pounded out on bongos with kazoos as accompaniment.

I honestly feel lucky and surprised it’s as close to the classic series as it seems.

What gets me is the snubbing of Shatner. I feel it is disrespectful, no profane, not to have him involved when the movie so heavily focuses on Kirk.

I wish I was as optimistic as you guys, but I just can't accept a fake classic crew.

For me, classic Star Trek was a big part of my youth and still is today.

Asking me to except a fake Kirk and Spock is like asking me to accept some stranger who replaces one of my family members.

For me, it's just not gunna happen.

That's the spirt!! I want more Kirk & Spock stories...and Shat & Nimoy are too old. So I intend to approach this Movie with an open Mind.

Oh man, that's all so wrong...... I wish the company of the Entertainment editing that new TOS style Star Trek starting over..... Also, the new Kirk wear a black shirt, he's supposed to wear the correct Captain Kirk's gold uniform...... why all BLACK????? All the crew supposed to be adults only, not the kids from high school....... like swoyerjay said.

They MADE these characters

There's no way this movie is going to be palatable with other actors playing THEIR parts.

Same with the rest of the crew .....

As far as i'm concerned, it's just another classic TV Show rip-off movie.

Mike---I'm admittedly probing ya here---but is it any bit significant
that the "Trek people" are all involved with this movie...
meaning most all other "TV show rip-off" movies aren't connected with
the TV shows except only in name.

I know I would've been much more excited about the DUKES movie if
the original creator was involved.

Roddenberry has passed yes---but the "Trek creative collective" (excuse
the Borg implication!) is helming this...isn't there a chance
it could be a tight project for even the most jaded Trek fans to view?
