My family and I saw the Haunted Mansion film today. We all enjoyed it way more than we expected, based on the box office and critical reaction. The Haunted Mansion is my favorite Disney attraction, and riding the Disney World version for the first time 11 years ago was almost like a pilgrimage. This movie is far superior to the Eddie Murphy film from 20 years ago. I don't hate that film, because it has it's moments, but it seemed confused about it wanted to be. This one is spooky, and has some scary moments, but doesn't delve into straight horror. It makes up for it with lots of atmosphere, and a nod to the ride and even the ride's history. If you aren't a super fan, you won't feel left out however. The story and characters are compelling.
It's too bad Disney stupidly released this in the middle of the onslaught of summer blockbusters. I think it would have done really well for them in late September as Halloween season was ramping up. It will probably be on Disney Plus by then, now.
