...I'm really unsure. I like the premise as presented, but Kurtzman and Orci have a gawd awful track record on delivering. Once I read Crowe's Jekyll is "The Nick Fury" of the group, whose monitoring all the monsters... Creature Commandos? Midnight Sons?

With Crowe, Bardem and Depp playing the other big name monsters so far, you know Cruise is going to end up as a Super-Mummy.

I am going to place my trust in the fact that they want to build a cinematic universe to cash in on the property and that they have a good idea for doing that in a modern setting.

A major part of the Universal monsters is the atmosphere. Setting this new film in the modern era is a huge mistake IMO. The crumbling castles with hidden laboratories...foggy moonlit forests...little European villages with cobblestone streets...they are as much a part of the Universal horror legacy as the monsters themselves.

What's the Mummy gonna do in this one? Strangle people who are engrossed in their Wi-Fi at Starbucks?

Look, it is a monster movie. I don't care what actor is in it as love a the story is good and somewhat believable and the effects are decent. I say bring it on!

Well said, Chris. It's really smart. I think Cruise is still a name with Box Office draw, whereas the Mummy is not as popular as, say Dracula or Frankenstein... He's really lower on the monster totem pole. So bringing in a big name is a wise move and indicative of their commitment. Could mean good things.

All kidding aside, Universal signing Cruise for this film means they are serious about relaunching the Universal Monsters franchise, and that's a good thing. I enjoyed the first Fraser Mummy film, but yeah, it was more of a Raiders pastiche than a remake of the Universal films. I hope we see more of the old Universal or Hammer flavor in this series.

The recent Mummy films were fun and lightweight action/adventure, but I can hardly see them as any kind of competition for the 30s and 50s movies. So I won't even count them as "Mummy" films.
I'd like to see them return to a more serious approach. I like a lot of Tom Cruise movies. He's a dedicated actor and producer who pays attention to his fans and is very respectful towards them, which is not all that common. If I were to take into account people's personalities and beliefs, I don't think I could watch any movie anymore. I'm not a personal fan of William Shatner, Harrison Ford, etc, but I do enjoy their roles and movies.
