Yeah, it looks like it'll be a slasher flick at first, then winds up being a bit like if Michael Crichton re-wrote H.P. Lovecraft.

I guess I'm in the minority because I didn't care for it.

I'm in the enjoyment lane on this one. Loved the idea on this one. The Japanese schoolgirls tidbit was very funny (those folks and their ghosts ).

I liked it. It was almost too meta for me, but at least it ended up doing that stuff for the sake of having fun, and not trying to squeeze too much of a moral or larger statement into it.

                  Didn't like it at all.
They gave the "surprise" away much too fast (that it's a scientific experiment), and every time it became exciting (and you got into the suspense of the chase), they interrupted it with the scientists giving their opinion.
I would have liked it better as a straight and uninterrupted horror story, ending in "it was all a set-up!".
                  .
                  .
                  .

                    Hmmmm....

I really liked it. You kinda got to get past the first 20 minutes or so.... especially if you lived through the 80's 'cos it looks like EVERY horror movie from the 80's. It isn't.... but that's the point, isn't it?

Best line: "I'm on speaker phone.... aren't I?"

                    >They gave the "surprise" away much too fast (that it's a scientific experiment),

It's not an experiment though. The idea is; back in the day the old gods would slaughter humanity if we didn't appease them with sacrifices. What you see in the film is where that's all led over the last 5000 years; the ritual has been automated. That's why it has to happen to certain people, in a certain way. So instead of burning you in a wicker man, or cutting out your heart atop a pramid you get this. And presumably every horror movie ever is part of that. (In some ways it's a less harsh version of the Brittney Spears South Park episode....)

I did my best to avoid any reviews before finally blind buying it on dvd and I am glad I did. Found the film very entertaining and not what I was expecting. Too bad they could not get the full rights to characters in the film that we obviously know who they were copying from

Me and the wife loved it. Tons of nods to the older films, some way more subtle than others. It was fun, I think they captured that 80's feel. In the past year I'd put it at the top of movies that we went to see, along with Cloud Atlas, Evil Dead and Lawless.

I feel stupid, but who were the characters supposed to be? I just watched the movie this past weekend and didn't see any obvious hints. I'm assuming you mean the 5 kids and not the monsters....

well one example would be the the figure holding the cube they see while in the elevator, clearly it was meant to be Pinhead from Hellraiser holding the Pandora's box
