    Recommended French Subtitled Horror

Dont know if you folks like subtitles or not but here are some gruesome French horror films that are really worth a viewing. I will not be held responsible for nightmares or lack of sleep after watching them!

    Frontier(s) (2007)

    Inside (2007)

    Martyrs (2008)

    The Horde (2009)

The last one is a decent zombie movie but I would recommend the others first.

Watched the Horde on netflix and loved it!!!
But then I like Zombies so I could be biased.
You say the others are better than that one I'll have to give te others a shot as well.

I did not care for Martyrs that much. I think it was way over hyped. It started off going one way and in that sense it was working, then it switches gears and you really see what is going on and after that I thought it became really dumb, more so just an exercise to show gruesome things on the screen. I would skip Martyrs, it doesn't really go anywhere and overall it was so so- just gruesome which is why it probably gained the hype that it did

I'm a big Zombie fan as well and the Horde was fantastic. I figured I would be biased to the Zombie flicks so figure I would recommend the Horde last. There is a British zombie movie (actually, TV series) that was good. It was a TV series called "Dead Set".
I didn't hear much about any of these films going in so my expectations were not really high. Martyrs caught me quite off guard. These French films have a lot of gore so be forewarned!

I've seen dead set as well.It was a 5-6 part mini series if I remember right?
It was done in the big brother style...LOL
I'm not into over the top gore,or gore for shock value.

I thought Martyrs was great! A very creative twist on the genre. I thought the imagery was fantastic, the performances were outstanding, and I never knew where it was headed next.

Frontier(s) was well done, but didn't have as many surprises for me. If you liked that I thought Calvaire (The Ordeal) was really twisted, though from Belgium, not France.

I still have to check out Inside and The Horde, so thank you for reminding me!

One of the things I like about the French horror movies of the last 10 years is that they're pushing the boundaries of the horror genre. Gaspar Noe's movies are like disturbing horror movies without typical horror movie plots. I'm not personally a big fan of Michael Hinkele's movies, but I appreciate his attempts to widen the boundaries as well.

Well we will disagree about Martyrs. Just wished it continued on the same path the film was originally going. I thought if it kept in that direction it would have been so much better. I did not think the plot itself was really too original.
I saw Calvaire years ago but I liked the film. I still laugh at the cafe piano dance without giving anymore away

Ha, ha, yes, Calvaire! What a strange movie that was!
Irreversible was another disturbing one. Dont know if it is worth a watch or not. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/
High Tension (2003) is definitely worth checking out, though http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338095/
I didnt enjoy any of these as much as the ones above but they deserve mention.

High Tension was awesome (and so was a fanedit that wiped out the "twist" ending"), Irreversible is more so disturbing because of the nasty rape scene, but the movie itself was not that bad (not that good, but not that bad)
