    Warm Bodies

Certainly not a hardcore monster movie, but it is about zombies, so...

My wife and I saw this over the weekend and liked it. Obviously this movie wouldn't exist without the Twilight craze, but it has more than Twi and doesn't take itself nearly as serious. It's just a fun little 97 minute movie. I could certainly understand our zombie hero's affection for the young lady.. she's a major babe.

    Hmmmm....

I was excited by the first preview, but got kinda nervous once I saw the ones with the girl.

I kind of cringed at the very idea when I first heardof this movie because once you try to humanize a zombie, you take away the very element that makes them scary in the first place. The fact that anyone of us can be a mindless consumer without thought or control of our actions is what creeps us out about zombies. Giving them "feelings" or emotions strips them of the danger they represent to us.

It's also one thing to sex up a vampire and make them glittery and pine for high school girls since there has always been a primordial attraction to them since the original gothic novels but a zombie is basically a rotting corpse that happens to have some basic motor skills and wants to eat you. Watching a girl fawn over an animated decomposing dead human being that is a mere shell of his former existence, is the kind of thing that you really can't unsee once it's mentioned and creepy for all the wrong reasons.

Have you seen the film? Despite your concerns, the "romantic" elements basically amount to friendship.. no creepy decomposing fawning zombie-sex involved.

No I haven't seen the film (and truthfully I won't because it has zero appeal to me), I was was just generalizing that the idea of "romancing a zombie" is pretty gross considering what a zombie actually is.

I don't know about that haven't you seen the girl from "return of the living dead three"?
She's pretty hot in an undead zombie kind of way....LOL

Yeah, but I think that's part of where the tension comes from. Ever see "Deadly Friend?" Same idea.

If the message of proper zombie films is society losing its bond of humanity, then this movie is about trying to reconnect with it.

I think the director and screenwriter knew not to push the physical aspect of romance too far with it. It's a light parody with some zombie trappings, but it's not meant to truly horrify, although there is the eating of brains, which has become requisite with all modern zombie flicks. But, at least it lets us know why zombies find brains so tasty, which no other zombie movie has in my limited experience with the genre.

The brain as memory booster was also recently done in the "iZombie" series from Vertigo

In "Return of the LIving Dead" they eat brains for the epenepherin, which temporarily aleviates the pain they're constantly suffering.
