    Rod Serling's Night Gallery talk

Been DVRing some Night Gallery's on MeTV and I must say they're not very good.

Back in the day when they were new I remember being really scared of them.

Today, they seem like bad throw-aways from season-5 of Twilight Zone.

Not only are they not scarry, but many are crazy boring .... Just watched one with Arte Johnson and it totally sucked.

One a seperate note I always thought Gary Collins starred in all of them ? .... so far he wasn't in any I seen.

Gary Collins starred in "The Sixth Sense", a show totally separate from "Night Gallery". However when it came time to syndicate "Night Gallery" they decided to add the episodes from "The Sixth Sense" to the package. But since the syndie "Gallery" was a half-hour, they cut up the "Sixth Sense" episodes and had Serling do framing intros to speed along the plot in order to fit a half-hour format. There were about 25 original episodes of "Sixth Sense".

I like "Camera Obscura", "Pickman's Model", "Silent Snow, Secret Snow" "Cool Air", & others. The early, literary adaptations hold up best, but you are right--NG has a cheap, uneven quality. The "funny" bits are usually not funny.

"Class of 1999" (?) with Vincent price is good, too.

been watching them lately on Hulu and they hold up better than I remember. Love the opening credits.

It seems most Night Galleries have what I call the Stephan King's "IT" syndrome

... meaning, they're good from the beginning and all the way through --- and then the end is a total let-down.

yeah they're pretty uneven as a whole.
there are plenty of reasons for that (according to the internets) like serling was unhappy with the producers decision to add light hearted (comical? hardly. embarrassing is more like it) segments. he supposedly wanted a darker program.
that being said, there were some really good episodes.
some that I remember were "death in the family" (wow!), "the cemetery", "the academy", "silent snow, secret snow" (wow again!), "brenda" and "big surprise"
