Scholastic Book: Movie Monsters by Alan Ormsby

Just got this from Amazon. Some of you guys probably got this in your Arrow book orders as kids. I was doing a search for extra Hugo parts (Man of 1000 faces), when this popped up. I kinda grazed over it for now, (until I can sit down and really read it). It's interesting to see what the author recommended to use for making the monster make-up; back in the days before you could go to Walgreens and buy a make-up kit or temp hair coloring. Pancake make-up, cornstarch, shoe polish, washable poster paints, food coloring. Back when it took real imagination to come up w/ this stuff.

I know Halloween is over, but monsters are cool anytime! Anyone got any memories of this book?

'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

I have a very dog-eared copy of this book--much beloved, it sparked my first forays into character make-up.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

Does the author have a bit for a Jekyll and Hyde transformation where at first as "Jekyll" the actor wears greenish make-up in front of green lights making the make-up invisible then when transforming into "Hyde" a purple light is turned on, revealing the make-up which is to be scary. If so, I've long tried to recall the name of this book.

"Dick Smith's Monster Make-Up", reprinted around 1989 with a foreward by Rick Baker. I have that one, too, even more inventive than Ormsby's.

I saw your entry on your Wonderblog. That's what actually convinced me to buy it!

I had that book as a kid... Not sure what happened to my copy, but I loved it.

Always remember how he advised starting with a paper bag on your head for the Frankenstein's Monster make up.

I loved that book! Taught me all the basics I've applied for many Halloweens since (papier-mache Klingon instead of Frank, for example). Don't know what happened to my original, but I'd love another!

I checked this out from the library every chance I got. Also had a tutorial on how to do Frankenstein's Monster with a lunch sack.

Guess I got the two mixed up. Must have read both back then. Also got the awesome make-up kit for Christmas one year.

Actually, looking at the covers of these on Amazon I think it was the Ormsby book that had both the Jekyll and Hyde and Frankenstein make-up mentioned here.

I have a weird story about that book. During the first pregnancy, we had all kinds of scares.

One of them involved me rushing the wife to the emergancy room for tests. I was worried we would lose the baby when i was ushered out of the room. In the waiting area was a dog eared copy of that book. It made little to no sense as to why it was there but it was like having an old friend waiting for me.

Yes, both of those are in the Ormsby book.

That's what I remembered. God, those pics bring back memories. I wanted to, but never attempted, the Frankie make-up. I want to try it now!
