I vote both but ...... is it a horror movie with a sci-fi tone or a sci-fi with a horror tone? I see it as more sci-fi with horror elements in it then a horror movie with sci-fi elements.

I think it's both. In fact, after watching Prometheus, it all seems almost Lovecraftian.

Instead of being trapped in a farmhouse fighting off zombies, they are trapped on a spaceship fighting off aliens.Classic horror plot. Its set in the future,in space with Alien"monsters"and on a spaceship which is Sci-fi. So its both,Sci-fi/horror.

It's classic Scifi, with some scary scenes in it. I wouldn't call it a horror movie.
Now The Sound of Music, that's a horror movie...

It's the best of both worlds for sure.

I would consider it a terrifying Sci-Fi film, as opposed to a speculative/futuristic Horror film.

While I voted Sci-Fi, here's a bit of the backstory...

"In writing the script, O'Bannon drew inspiration from many previous works of science fiction and horror. He later stated that "I didn't steal Alien from anybody. I stole it from everybody!"

Alien is an obvious rip off of two movies, It-The Terror from Beyond Space and Planet of the Vampires.

I think of it as a horror movie with a sci-fi setting.

Good question but Sci-Fi for me all the way.

Wow! I didn't know about the "Planet of the Vampires". I think I have a copy. If so, I'll try to watch it tomorrow. Thanks T-Bolt!

so for those who consider it horror, did you think the sequels were horror films too? where does the series diverge? I mean, Aliens is about space marines kicking Alien *** and getting eaten in the process. Scary? sure, bit in the same sense that Starship Troopers was scary when the aliens attacked

I think it is a a great movie. Period. If taxonomy is your thing.....you can obsess over it all day and not get anywhere. But if I were arranging DVDs by genre, I would put it in sci-fi....just my two cents.

If the sci-fi aspect alone removes it from the horror shelf, where does that leave poor Dr Frankenstein?

If forced to choose, I'd call it horror, but I think it's both. It's similar to Jaws, which I'd call horror / adventure.
