Don't Be Afraid of the Dark thread

Just watched Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) last night.

Haven't seen it for over 30 years so it was almost like watching a new movie.

    I have a few questions

    Are the trolls demons ?

    Are they supernatural ?

Where did they live before the house was built ?

How big are they ?.... sometimes they look like GI Joe size, other times a ventriloquist dummy size.

Anybody ever notice when they peek in the chimney cleaning hole it's not correct inside ?
The floor of the chimney SHOULD be right below the cleaning hole .... but in the movie the chimney floor seems to go down really low and is unseen.

Why did I used to think this movie was scary ?

Credits on the end said the trolls were played by Twiki LOL

don't know about the original as I have not seen it in at least 30 years but the remake I think they were supernatural and were much scarier

      >Are the trolls demons ?

I don't know why, but since I was a kid I've considered them gnomes.

      >Are they supernatural ?

I think they're both supernatural and natural. It's implied that they're long-lived like some sort of magical being, but it's also implied that they require humans, probably for reproduction; like a normal, living being.

      >Where did they live before the house was built ?
      >in the movie the chimney floor seems to go down really low and is unseen.

I'd always thought they were deep dwelling critters.... like gnomes.... and had either tunneled up into the chimney, or the chimney accidentally intersected one of their tunnels when the house was built.

      >How big are they ?.... sometimes they look like GI Joe size, other times a ventriloquist dummy size.

It seems like they're around a half meter tall.

      >Why did I used to think this movie was scary ?

'Cos you were young and impressionable?

      >the remake I think they were supernatural and were much scarier

The remake was pretty good; and yeah, the little monster dudes were nifty. I didn't like that they added a kid though; just 'cos EVERY horror movie adds a kid these days.

I didn't see the remake yet but ti seems adding a kid would make it more scary instead of the creatures going after a grown woman.

Unlike Kim Darby, most REALISTIC grown women would literally kick their asses

          >I didn't see the remake yet

It's not a bad flick. I'd recommend it.

          >ti seems adding a kid would make it more scary instead of the creatures going after a grown woman.

I dunno; yeah, they're more of a PHYSICAL threat, but the idea of the original was that the husband thought she was going nuts, and she was almost believing him. That's the real horror of the film. The kid angle feels real played out to me these days.

          >most REALISTIC grown women would literally kick their asses

HAW! Yeah. I got the impression from the original that she didn't neccessarily believe the little pointy headed dudes were real herself; and by the time she did they'd started grinding her down so's her resistance and drive were low. Plus her husband thinking she was wacky would take a toll.

I dunno mike, but that show scars the hell out of me as a kid.
I tracked it down on bootleg DVD a few years ago...matter of fact, I think there was a time where I actually uploaded it to some members he cuz they wanted to see what we were talking about.

I'm surprised I really liked it

By the way, I could have sworn the father on the remake was Mark Walberg

We watched it too, and agree - surprisingly entertaining and spooky for a remake.
It was a Del toro film - he did Hellboy for example...pretty good director.

although, the little demons reminded me of the tooth fairies from Hellboy II haha

Spoiler for those who have not seen the movie- I believe they were Demons or supernatural for sure. They vanished at the end. Were not just a physical creature.

For the new movie, I didn't like the girlfriend getting sucked in at the end.

I liked her character and don't think she deserved it.

Would have rather seen the mother come visit and it sucked her in LOL
