UK Universal monster blu ray set, save $$$ compared to US.

When the ALIEN movies came out in a blu ray box set, I remember being steered to get the region free UK version by someone on a list and it saved me a ton compared to getting the US version.

Well, now we got the Universal Monsters set and the same thing holds true

The UK version is region free and comes in regular and a deluxe coffin box both much cheaper than the US counterpart and region free.

There is one caviet though. Since these are UK, the non high definition extras might be in PAL, thier standard definition video standard. Since the non HD extras are pretty much stuff carried over from past DVD releaees I already have, I am not concerned with that. Also, some blu ray players players play all standards. This is not confirmed though, the SD extras might be encoded on a HD standard or thry simply might keep it NTSC since it is more likely UK blu ray players handle all standards.

Yeah, the only tricky thing with releases like these are if the extras are in standard def and PAL (once in a while the menus too). Not sure if that is the case here, but at least it's region free.

Too bad they're missing the complete monster sets, like the Legacy Collection had.

I have all the Legacy collections, but I'll probably still pick this up.

But yeah, we definitely need a full Universal Monsters Blu ray set containing all the sequels, the House Of movies, the Kharis movies, etc.

Anyone get this version yet? Can you watch the extras on Region 1 (US) players?

I attempted to purchase yesterday on ebay as I had almost enough in ebay bucks to get it. There was some glitch at the end of the payment process that the payment didn't go through. When I attempted to buy again, ebay had cleared out my ebay bucks. Sooo, I had to call them and they are "looking into it". As soon as that gets resolved, I plan to buy the imported set.

Had the deluxe coffin box edition in my hand at HMV yesterday.... exceptionally nice indeed.
But you can get it cheaper online.

Thought I'd report that there is no trouble at all playing the couple UK discs I checked out (Frankenstein and Dracula). The standard definition documentaries carried over from the earlier DVD play fine. I believe Universal makes one disc for worldwide use. It prompts you to choose a launguage first thing and I think it is able to know if it is playing on a region 1 or 2 unit and access the correct SD format extras for the region.

Just a heads up, this has dropped down even further in price to 18 pounds at amazon.uk. My friend picked up a copy (I already have it) and it worked out to about $31 CDN shipped for him. I can't see getting it for cheaper than this, a hell of a deal!
