^^^ Yeah, MST really did a number on that movie. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

Dang Don, that was exactly what I was about to post. That MST was probably the best I've seen, though I've sadly seen too few of them. Was the movie called THis Island Earth?I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.
If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.Comment

that was not MST's best, but it was pretty good, especially the riffing on the movie. The host segments were really weak. You must try to generate happiness within yourself. If you aren't happy in one place, chances are you won't be happy anyplace. -Ernie BanksComment

"I'm not an alien." My friend Chad summed it up best: "I went in wondering why they'd riff a clasic film like this.... I left wondering why nobody'd done it sooner." "This Island Earth" really isn't a good movie. It LOOKS nice, but it's kinda stupid.
>The host segments were really weak.
I think part of that was 'cos they had to explain thyings to a wider audience, so they feel kinda forced. I did laugh at Crow tunneling back to Earth. "Breach hull.... kill everyone. Yup! There it is."

I'd rate it an average episode. There are so many better ones.

I think the host segments with Forrester were the worst, missing the chemistry with Frank Coniff. And did they really need to explain themselve to the audience? You must try to generate happiness within yourself. Yeah, the movie is such a mishandling of a great premise especially since it never really got into many theatres, so it just became another episode...
In the MST book, they explain that test audiences (of teen girls!) didn't get the film, so they retooled it. The studio then felt that "Barb Wire" was a better choice and chose to back the release of that. I'm not saying the MST movie would have shattered records but I think it would have had a super solid opening weekend. I was planning on driving to the states to catch it if I had to.
As for "This Island Earth", it's revered in the same sense as "Day the Earth Stood Still" or "Forbidden Planet" because it was the first wave of "serious science fiction" films with great sfx and production values. However, of the three it's got the weakest story and is more eye candy than anything else. It is completely ripe for riffing.Places to find PlaidStallions online: https://linktr.ee/Plaidstallions
