    Paul Naschy Werewolf movies

I know some of you (namely Brian) are big fans of Paul Naschy's horror movies. I've never seen a single one. They never aired in my area as a kid, and I've never seen them on cable since, or DVD.

Today my wife and kids gave me one of those huge 100 movie horror DVD sets for Father's Day, and there are two Naschy movies on them. "The Fury of the Wolfman" and "The Werewolf vs. Vampire Woman". I was wondering what to expect as far as gore, sex, etc. Basically I need to know if I can watch this when the kids are around, or when after hours. I let Andrew watch some of the earlier Hammer flicks before they got really gory and basically soft-core.

I'm assuming "Fury" is the initial film, correct? What are your opinions of it and the other film?

I haven't seen those two, but I recall some nudity and just a little gore in the ones I've watched. I won't let my kids see them.

I don't know how I missed this thread.

I let my daughter watch "Assignment Terror" the last time it was on the Monster channel, it seemed to be the TV print and the only Naschy film I'd let my kid watch.

Watched the "Werewolf Vs Vampire Women" last week and yeah, there's boobies and blood galore in it. Probably best to watch that solo.

Although it is possible that set includes TV prints, so you may want scan them by yourself.

Ah, will do. I kind of figured as much, since hammer was in it's blood and boobies era by the same time period. I guess that where horror went to at that point.

So is "Fury of" the first film?

And no "Fury" isn't first, it's fourth .

"Frankenstein's Bloody Terror" is first and Frankenstein isn't in it (!)
"Nights of the Wolfman" (not sure if I've seen it)
            "Assignment Terror/Dracula Vs Frankenstein"
            "Fury of the Wolfman"
            "werewolf vs vampire women"
            "Curse of the Devil"
            "Dr Jeckyll and the Wolfman"
"The Craving" (which is a remake of "Werewolf Vs Vampire Women"

Because these got released a million times under different names, I have no idea if I have the set or a bunch of doubles. At one point I had some in Spanish on VHS.

Naschy did it all by the way, played mummies, vampires, hunchback, demons, dr moreau you name it.

Wow, I had no idea there were that many! Well, since I only have two, I'll watch them in order.

Frankenstein not being in a movie with his name in the title is kind of like Hammer's "Brides of Dracula"! The old Horror bait and switch!

              Thanks for the info.

You don't need to follow them in sequence at all, they are very loosely tied together ala the Universal films.

Good to know. I'll just set aside some non-kid time and soak these two in. I'm assuming these are hard to come by outside of bootlegs, and these random Public Domain DVD sets? No official releases at all?

It's a mess trying to navagate through all the different cuts, title changes, etc. The European film market was chaos back then. There's a good chance the versions you got are safer TV prints, so try to take a quick look first.

Ah, I remember my dad proudly coming home with American Werewolf in London for rent. He had a very close control on the remote control. He and my poor monther had already exerienced it that theatre and he was dying to show me all the transformation scenes, which where incredible. He just wanted to expose me to as least sex and nudity as possible, so I heard a lot of "Kids close your eyes right now!" God, why do I think I'm gonna end up doing that with our kids too...

I watched "Fury of the Wolfman" today. Well...that was rough. No disrespect to those who love these films, but this one was kind of a mess. Maybe it was the edit I saw. It seemed to have been edited with a buzz saw and velcro. Naschy himself was the only highlight for me. I liked his Wolfman, although sometimes his attacks were frantic and savage, and other times he was just kind of wandering around town.

The plot about the mad scientist chick was hard to understand until they spelled it all out at the end. The strange hippie commune/Island of Dr. Moreau/Phantom of the Opera castle was just bizarre. Guys walking around in suits of armor for no apparent reason? Plant people?

It's fun in a "bad movie" sort of way, but I guess I was expecting something a little more legit, based on good word of mouth over the years. I wasn't expecting Hammer, but maybe something like an AIP flick.

Most of his movies have bare boobies, some even have full frontal nudity. The werewolf is cool too!

Watching "The Werewolf VS the Vampire Women" right now. It's a re-run on the monster channel.

Most Naschy films have been kind of murdered with edits/translations. I love them but will admit they are an acquired taste.

I wish I could get originals with subtitles...

"Fury" was boobie free. I'm thinking it may have been heavily edited. There were scenes that sure looked like they were leading to nudity, only to cut to an unrelated scene.

I did find it funny that Wolfman and the heorine had time to shack up before the evil doctor came back to her castle.
