    Van Helsing - Reboot

This is an older article, so I'm not sure if it was mentioned before - I didn't see anything after a search.

There's a Van Helsing reboot scheduled - and so far it seems that the project is going to involve Tom Cruise and the dudes who wrote Transformers, Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens - and have their fingers in a bunch of other nerd related projects.

    Let's see.
    Tom Cruise+Transformers+Cowboys&Aliens.

If that doesn't make me run for the hills, nothing will...

And I thought the original Van Helsing movie was bad....

People tend to say this a lot, but I watch A LOT of bad movies - often BECAUSE they're bad - so I don't mean this lightly: "Van Helsing" is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

It COULD have been great, but it's a horrible misfire all the way around. Jackman is likeable in almost everything, but not here. Staring at Kate Beckinsale doesn't even make it worth while. The new versions of the Universal monsters are horrible. Dracula may be the worst version put on screen. The Monster Squad had much better versions!

The only kind of Van Helsing movie I would like to see would follow the tone of Stoker's novel, and either take place before or after those events, or perhaps retell Dracula from Van Helsing's perspective alone.

For a good Van Helsing movie, go watch Hammer's "Brides of Dracula". Peter Cushing is the best Van Helsing, bar none.

the only things I liked in it were the opening bit with Hyde and the design of the Frankenstein Monster. Universal found the only missing ingredient to make it worse: Tom Cruise.

I liked some of the 1st Van Helsing but some of it was silly, like t-bolt said, the opening bit with Mr Hyde and Frankenstiens Monster were good, the Vatican part was also cool, when the Monks had all their gadgets and were testing them out,had abit of the James Bond feel to it

Have to agree with with Earth 2 Chris, that Peter Cushing is the best Van Helsing so far but if they would of done Hugh Jackmans VH like in the old hammer films, then he would of been up there with P.Cushing.

It's not a totally bad film,I have seen worse Soloman Kane anyone?

I didn't care much for the Van Helsing movie, but the concept still seems like it could be a blockbuster. Kind of makes sense to reboot it and give it another try.

The Sideshow Van Helsing figure looks pretty cool though.

Hey, I don't mean anything against people who enjoyed it - I'm sure I love a lot of movies other people hated.

I think the premiss is good. I think it's somewhat proven now that bringing back the classic Universal Monsters in straight-up remakes is not going to work for modern audiences - partially (I think) because their main appeal is the 'classic' historical status they have in pop culture.

So I think the idea of Van Helsing is an interesting way to play with the mythology of the creatures, use their popularity in a different way.

My thing is that it's just so weird to me that we live in a world where it's easier now to get financing for reboots of big movies that flopped than it is to just move on to other ideas.

I like the Cruise-miester quite a bit, though he has been in some bad movies lately.

I'm looking forward to the "Tropic Thunder" follow up that's rumored

"Top Gun 2" is probably just going to be terrible - but it might be insanely amazing

The craziest movie I see on his IMDb list now is called "All You Need Is Kill", which sounds like "Groundhog Day" meets "Battle Los Angeles". Supposedly he's in a war fighting against aliens and he relives the same day again and again while he improves his fighting skills.

                              >Tom Cruise+Transformers+Cowboys&Aliens.

....I’ve had this dream before.... I wake up in a cold sweat, screaming.... screaming.... screaming....

I dunno; this is another one I didn’t find bad, but didn’t find good. Just blah. REALLY blah. And I’m not even sure WHY I thought it was blah.... it SHOULD have been awesome. I liked the monsters.... other than Drac. He was kind of a puffed shirt. I liked the end ‘cos he DIDN’T get the girl. I wanted to smack the little monk guy, but he didn’t seem enough to ruin things.

                              >we live in a world where it's easier now to get financing for reboots of big movies that flopped than it is to just move on to other ideas.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. To that end, there’s ALWAYS a price to be paid for ANYTHING. The same mentality that gets a big budget Avengers film made is the one that insists a known property is better than an unknown.... even if the known one flopped. (“People watch that ‘Plan 9" film right? Say.... what if we redo THAT one?”) It’s the need to play it safe; to go with the known, the things that’ll have people talking. People won’t talk about something they’ve never heard of before. They WILL talk about something that flopped; and to the execs, any buzz is good buzz. Hell; for the PUBLIC, any buzz is good buzz.

                              Don C.
