I love Chaney, Jr.. He was great early on in Of Mice and Men and The Wolfman. His later portrayals definitely got hit or miss.

I enjoy MOTF & have seen it many times. It was my first intro to Chaney Sr, barring seeing stills of silents in film books.
I like Cagney's performance, but I now see the film as glossy & sanitized. Even as a older kid, I realized the Westmore '50s recreations of classic Chaney make-ups were stolid, pale imitations.
Interestingly, I believe it's Cagney's recreated Phantom which influenced the Aurora kit.WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.Comment

The biggest problem I had is they didn't recreate Chaney's makeup close enough to make the story credible. If you had never seen the man's work and were watching this film as a quick reference, you would walk away wondering why anyone ever bothered with him. And THAT is the problem. This is why I don't care much for films about other stars. Instead of paying tribute, they often dilute who they were and what they really did in an effort to make them "human".Comment
