I'd give it to Once Upon A Time as better by far. The special effects are better and the characters are more interesting. I like the back & forth bit between Storybook Land & Storybrook. Rumplestiltskin steals the show by far! Interesting to see that since Disney owns the show, there's a few little movie bits thrown in, such as the Seven Dwarves being similar to the cartoon (Grumpy stands out, as does Dopey, and Doc was called by name during the birth scene). Gepetto has the same accent, Jiminy the umbrella, and Maleficent appears.
The lead character in Grimm is pretty uninteresting to me, as is the dying old lady. But I do like the sarcastic Bad Wolf sidekick. But it's more of a cop show with a gimmick. Don't think it will last.
And having said all that, let me state that I'd much rather have seen DC Vertigo Comics' FABLES adapted intact instead of being portioned off as OUAT.
I like the concept of Grimm, but it's suffering from the Freak of the Week syndrome (of X-Files and Smallville and Supernatural fame) after just two weeks.
Once Upon A Time, however, has me interested. The show's got a good look to it and the production values are better than your average SYFY show. I like adopting some of the Disney framework. By playing with characters that are familiar, it drew me in a little quicker.
Yeah, Bill Willingham's stomach must be turning over this.
So it appears that Once Upon a Time might be taking the Lst format of flashing back on one particular character's past each episode? With the second ep from the Wicked Wueen's POV?
I don't think the two shows are comparable to each other.
It be like comparing Law and Order with CSI.
Grimm suffers from what I call "originitis"... An inflamation of the origin story. Dragging it out for no one's benefit and interfering with the action.
Buffy had the same problem during season 1, as did the X Files. But good news is once those shows hit their strides even boring characters like Giles and Scully became interesting.
The Big Bad Wolf serves as the "Spock" in the show. They should utilize him more instead of waiting for 30 minutes to bring him in.
Over on OUAT, they're following the Lost platform. Cutting into the exposition with flashbacks tO keep the action going. Henry serves as this show's "Spock" and he's on the ball. Something strange happens to Emma? BAM- the boy is there with an explanation for the audience. No having to wait a half hour of boring crap as a "detective" fails to detect stuff.
I'm willing to give Grimm a shot, because I honestly miss the X files and Buffy and I really want to have that fun back.
OUAT- what can I say? I'm a sucker for Fairy Tales, love reading FABLES, enjoyed the 10th Kingdom, and all that.
As an aside, am I the only one confused as to how Snow White came to be fairest in all the land? I mean seriously, the Evil Queen is smoking hot compared to "Big Ears McGhee"!

Yeah, her present day haircut really isn't that flattering to her ears... The flash back and forward almost had the effect of Baby New Year taking off his hat in that Rudolph special.
Huge fan of Fables, and would have much rather had that launch into a tv show successfully. They do have some great actors, Robert Carlisle as Rumplestilkskin 1st and foremost... Really surprised to see Giancarlo Esposito as the Relatively humble Magic Mirror after his rather sizzling performance on Breaking Bad ended a few weeks back. You could almost see him being a much more effective Wolf (in sheep's clothing) than the guy currently in the rather cliched role.
