I would not place too much emphasis on this shot since we don't know the context of it's place in the film...or if it will even be in the movie at all.

I hope, I mean REALLY, REALLY hope that this isn't the way the movie is going to go. CGI or something, maybe. Out of context sunscreen shots or something. Johnny Depp seems to feel like he has to look weirder and weirder in his movies. His eyebrows alone have kept me from watching ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Seriously.

There's plenty of hysteria regarding these unofficially released photos on the DS fanboards. Some of the assumptions and comparisons are actually kinda entertaining.

It seems to me that the simplicity of the makeup in these shots indicates that there will be a significant amount of post production CGI work for this scene. I have absolute faith in Burton's visual concept for this movie. I believe that he completely understands the atmosphere & the physical vibe which made the original show work. The strength of the cast is also promising.

Will the direction & storyline measure up to the aesthetics and the casting?? That's an entirely different, and legitimate, concern.

In the original movie adaptation, when Barney is walking around in the sunlight with his love interest, something dramatic happens. That event was portrayed via the best technology available at that time (it was portrayed slightly different on the TV show where the effects exceeded the budget for Daytime TV). I suspect that this current effort is paying homage to that particular moment in DS History and is using today's technological options to bring it to life.
