don't be afraid of the dark new re-release special edition

because of the remake, the Warner archives re-released and remastered the film as well as giving it some new extras. I hate buying things twice, but I will make an exception in this case

Looks great. I've been waiting for an official DVD release of this for YEARS now so I could finally ditch the bootlegs, and they make it a "made-to-order" disc? What is with this crap?

the margin of a return profit to Warner bros would not constitute the full cost to actually manufacturer a real pressed disc. Therefore the other solution-- burn on demand allows the studios to release hundreds of films that might have otherwise never seen the light of day on a dvd release (at least in this country), without using the full cost to create a pressed disc

Actually you should look into this, Sony, fox/mgm and Warner all have burn on demand titles and many of them are rare films with relative nice transfers to go with it.

And yet it was released on VHS during the time that VHS releases were in the $75 to $100 range, through Lorimar.

The cost of releasing a pressed disc is MUCH cheaper in today's market than releasing a VHS in the 80's.

That being said, I say wait for the official DVD release of the remake. Chances are they will include a pressed copy of the original similar to Keanu Reeves's The Day the Earth Stood Still.

"Made to order" DVDs by studios is a crock.

They should release a double feature DVD of this with Bad Ronald!

Both are made for TV movies and are about creeps living in the wall.

and that is more so because the price is what the companies wanted to charge for it. It might be much cheaper than those days, but the amount to put in for a pressed disc vs the amount of actual units it would sell to make the full return profit and more is NOT there.

also because it is now a full WB archive title, I strongly doubt you are going to get the original as a bonus when the remake gets the blu/dvd release.
