The amazing thing is that 30 years later some of the films on the list are still banned by the British Censors in their uncut version.

Cannibal Holocaust is still the best of them.

British censors (and society) amaze and fascinate me. Some things they think nothing of (page 3 girls anyone?), but certain horror films are still banned....

Nothing a simple cup of tea couldn't solve, eh, old chap...?
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

It's not just horror films. There is a western film called Ulzanas Raid with Burt Lancaster which is banned in the UK in it's uncut version.

Is there a list of UK banned movies? It would be interesting to see what's on it.

From Karen's list up top it would seem to be things notorious for violence as opposed to the bans on things for sex we were more accustomed to in North America.

Last House on the Left is great. I love the soundtrack by David Hess and how it oddly works so good with the sadism of the film.

I've only watched I Spit On Your Grave once in my life. Like Salo, there is no need to ever watch it twice. I like Cannibal Ferox better than Cannibal Holocaust for the non-intentional humor of it. Only watched House on the Edge of the Park once too, not a fan.

Last House on the Left was the first and best of all the over-the-top horror of the 70s.

Britain seems to be the opposite of us: here, sex is bad violence is okay. There it's kinda the opposite.

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has always been very inconsistent in its ratings decisions.

At least these days, quite a few previously censored movies have finally been released uncut. Re-Animator and Enter the Dragon to name two.

But it's not just horror movies that they censor...
Here's an example of a few non horror films and TV releases which are cut in the UK:

                  Batman Returns
                  Batman Forever
                  Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
                  Dragonslayer
                  Mulan
                  Judge Dredd
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
                  Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
                  The Mummy Returns
                  Angels and Demons
                  Darkman
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (various episodes censored on home video)
Doctor Who (yes, amazingly, the BBFC has censored some episodes of DW for home video.)

A lot of those films were cut with distributor approval in order to get a lower rating and were not censored in the normal fashion.

God i can't believe i'm sticking up for the BBFC.

Oh, I was wondering if they were bent out of shape over the Caine/Reeve makeout scene.

Well.... that's the nice way of putting it; but the lower the rating, the wider the audience so a lot of companies "tone it down" so's they can get a lesser rating. It LOOKS entirely voluntary, but it's the execs kowtowing to the ratings board.
