I can't compare it to the new apes movies...because they are totally two different types of movies.
But this Thing prequel does have an old school feel to it...which is very cool.
The only gripe is that this Norwegian team speaks English...when you see the Norwegians arrive at the American station in the first Carpenter flick...there was obviously a language barrier...that's why they got shot in the first place...lol.
But of course...they explain why...the Norwegians are joined by Americans...whose presence was unmentioned in the original film....so how convenient...lol.
Norwegian will be spoken as well of course.
But it looks good nevertheless...I definitely wanna check it out...

But that said, this prequel/re-imagining looks really good. The first Thing freaked the hell out of me. This is pushing the right buttons yet again.Last edited by MicromanZone; Jul 15, '11, 9:18 PM.Comment

Hollywood has been remaking movies as long as they've been making movies. It's the status quo. There were dozens of silent versions of Dracula and Frankenstein, etc. back in the day.
This actually looks pretty cool, and I'll try and catch it on cable or something.Comment

There were many Vampire related silent films but really only two that actually featured Dracula and both were unauthorized. The lost "Dracula's Death/Drakula Halala" (1921) which isn't an adaption of the novel and takes place in an insane asylum where an inmate claims to be Dracula and the famous Nosferatu (1922). Nosferatu is very good BTW. Be sure to watch the color tinted one.
Frankenstein, there were only 3 I can think of. The most famous being Edison's version from 1910 and the lost 1915 "Life without Soul." Life without soul is very loosely adapted. Lastly there is the also lost "Il mostro di Frankenstein" from 1921. Edison's Frankenstein is surprisingly impressive considering its age and it's only about 13 minutes long.Last edited by Werewolf; Jul 16, '11, 12:36 AM.You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

I might have used a bit of hyperbole. The point is it's been happening since they've been making movies, and not just with horror films.Comment

Been anticipating this movie highly since it was announced.
I like the fact that they went the prequel route rather than doing a remake.
Now, we'll actually get to see the Norwegian team discovering the ship and defrosting the alien and everything.
Of course, this movie should end with the helicopter chasing the Thing-Dog across the ice! Here's hoping.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

That’s the issue. Old ideas are simply being regurgitated and not being digested into something newer than the source.Comment

The trailer looks good, though it does feel like a sort of remake.
I've seen worse, so I'll give this one a try.
Though as a prequel, I would have preferred The Thing: First Class, where all the young Things go to school. I can see the teacher shouting: "Hey, Thing. Yeah you, in the last row! Stop replicating your desk and start paying attention!".
