    Universal monsters or Hammer monsters?

    What do you like better?

I love them both but for me, The Hammer monsters were so much more scarier and more entertaining.

If Mego made Universal and Hammer monster figures but you could only collect one line which would it be?

The Universal monsters will always be my favourites. The Hammer films were great, but the classic Universal monster pictures have an enduring, timeless quality for me.

Same here. Universal will always be my 'brand' of choice when it comes to the classic monsters. Now Hammer certainly holds a place near and dear to my heart. But the one thing those Hammer monsters never had was pathos. You never felt pity for them. It was more of a straight interpretation, with a jar of blood thrown in your face. Now I will say I grew to prefer Christopher Lee over Bela as Dracula. Perhaps because I felt the character needed a little more edge to him. And who can beat Lee with those blood shot eyes and blood dripping fangs? That was definitely a classic.

Yeah I share that opinion as well. Also love Lee's Kharis.

As for Frankenstein, I really like some of the Hammer ones but they wisely chose not to emulate Universal and there really is only one Wolfman.

"The Beast Must Die" is one of my favorite werewolf flicks

I'll take Universal monster figures and Hammer monster movies.

I love 'em both for the reasons stated by other museum members. If Mego had made monster figures of both studios versions of monsters, it would be a tough call (especially as my 7 year old self stands in the toy aisle with impatient parent waiting for decision). I'd end up get mix & match… Karloff Frankenstein, Lee Dracula… would love to have seen a Peter Cushing Dr. Frankenstein or Van Helsing in the line!

I don't hate it, don't get me wrong although his origin is a bit convoluted.

That's not a Hammer flick though right, it's Amicus isn't it?

Part of that was the era: boobs weren't so popular in the 30's and 40's. (And in the 20's women tried to look like little boys.)

                          ....stupid 30's....

Well Hammer had Ingrid Pitt, but...

I'd have to go with Universal for the characters. There are some fantastic movies in the Universal monster library (Bride being the apex) but there are a lot of so-so ones too, that are still fun to watch. I guess I probably enjoy the Hammer flicks more, because the storytelling is a bit more compelling, and the pacing is more in keeping with more modern movies.

But overall, it's still Universal, although I prefer Lee's Dracula. I like my Drac as a nasty bastich!

I love them both, too, but would go with Universal slightly over Hammer. I prefer the way the monsters look in the Universal movies. Though, I too, prefer Lee as Dracula.
