    Walking Dead Episode 1

Watched it last night. Loved that it does follow the graphic novel so closely, but the best parts are all the character bits that Frank Darabont has added in or expanded on.

You can really see him exploring many of the hard questions that he only touched on in his adaptation of The Mist (and we know how that ended!).

If anyone wants to compare the show with the comic, Image has posted the first issue here for folks to read for free...

I've been planning on watching it Sunday.

    How'd you score a preview?

The comic starts out in Cynthiana, KY, where I grew up and my mother was a nurse at the hospital where the protagonist wakes up. Kirkman and Moore (writer and artist for the comic) seem to have done a tour of duty there too.

Hope the series starts there too.

Kirkman and Moore are from Cynthiana, and so am I. In fact, I'm still here!

I somehow grew up never knowing them. They were just a bit younger than me. Young enough that our paths never crossed.

I believe Tony Moore lives around these parts again, and I think Kirkman lives in nearby Lexington.

We watched it about a week ago, we both really enjoyed it! So far I think that the guy they got to play Dale is mis-cast, but we'll see. (I would have opted for Jeff Combs)

Can't wait to see it again on AMC this weekend!

Earth_2_Chris, yes indeed. He was living in Richmond for a while. (Robert that is) And you are right, he lives in Lexington. I have all of the issues, and in one of them another writer/artist is referencing Kirkman and says something to the effect of: "Yeah, when I met him he was just a dirty hillybilly from Kentucky."
I wonder why they chose to have it take place in Georgia when the book storyline begins in Central Kentucky?

A little disappointing, but it's probably to move the story along. They only have a limited number of episodes, and (I think) Rick catches up to some Cynthiana refugees just outside of Atlanta early in the series.

I'm sure most folks in our town would rather not have it associated with a zombie apocalypse.

I know. But the only other time I remember seeing it in movies or on tv were when the Blues Brothers played the Harrison County fair in the sequel.

Which I'm sure wasn't filmed there, but still...

Cool version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" though.

Most of the Image Comics press mentions that Kirkman and Tony Moore were childhood friends who grew up reading Image Comics if that puts the relative age thing into perspective. I'm guessing that would have made him a tween/teen in the nineties when Spawn and Dragon et al were just starting off.

The series currently takes place in a bedroom community outside of Washington DC.

I think what I found most shocking of the adaptation to live action television is the idea of the husk of former humanity and it's impact on the survivors. In those early issues, Tony Moore is definitely more of a "Monster" artist than Charles Adlard who took over the series from him (and excels at mood and a certain degree of naturalism).

Really loving Moore's most recent work on titles like Ghost Rider and FrankenCastle.

Yeah, I was probably leaving high school when they were coming in. I think Moore and I may have painted murals in the hallways in one of the elementary schools one year, but we never met. In a town this small, that's odd, especially with the same interests!

And yes, the Blues Brothers did play the Harrison County Fair. But I don't think they filmed here. They did ask for some details on Harrison Co./Cynthiana to add to the movie though.
