Not enough Ghost stories out there.........

I dont really go for the slash and bash horror movies.
What I enjoy are ghost stories.
    Especially with a twist(the sixth sense,the others).
Peter Straubs 1980s adaptation of A Ghost story is one of my faves.
It seems horror film makers are just trying to gross viewers out the most, extreme decapitations or ultra blood squirting seems to get high ratings
    in certain circles.
A friend gave me a copy of the hills have eyes.
I found I could not watch it all the way through.
It was way too graphic imo.
All I am saying is I would prefer supernatural stories to the ultra violence we are being fed.

When I watch a movie I like to be taken somewhere else, not having the fear of travling through the desert or looking at someone the wrong way placed in my mind.
I hear enough of that from the news.

I saw that one. It was cool for all the 70s references, but I really didn't like the ending. Too ambiguous, no justice, 'nuff said.

Lovely Bones is not a scary ghost story. it is an extremely sad and depressing movie about a murdered little girl whose ghost lingers to help her family......it was a very good movie. just not what I think JP is looking for.
Ghost Story was a great flick. one of Fred Astaires last if I am not mistaken
check out the Others with Nicole Kidman. Creepy movie.

There are moments of real horror in Lovely Bones that are way scarier than your average Friday the 13th or whatever. Particularly if you are a parent, it really taps into those genuine fears in a way that you can relate to, more than say the fear of someone in a hockey mask coming at you with a machete.

I think it was a good twist to have it told from the Girl's POV in the afterlife and how she influences events, although I agree that the ending is not 100% satisfying in the typical Hollywood sense, I think it fits in with the tone of the rest of the film. I can see why it got mixed reviews, but I think that is pretty typical of most of Peter Jackson's non-LOTR films.

I like my horror movies to have a bit of the religious or supernatural feel in them: The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, Devil Dog: The Hound from Hell, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

In terms of "Ghost" movies; they don't really scare me so I don't really consider them "Horror" movies. I prefer to refer to them as Supernatural Thrillers.

                The few I have enjoyed:

The Others (good 6th sense type twist)
The Lady in White (a childhood favorite)
                13 Ghosts (Castle original)
House on Haunted Hill (original...although does this one qualify as a Ghost story?)
The Legend of Hell House (which I would classify more as a horror flick due to imagery)

There are two movies that always scare the crap out of me,first one: The Haunting (1963) with Julie Harris,Claire Bloom,Russell Johnson and Russ Tamblyn and the second one:The Uninvited (1947) with Ray Milland. Both black & white and creepy!.

Good post. I don't like the gore like I used too. I am a big horror/sci-fi fan but could do with out the blood and guts. I great horror movie doesn't have to be bloody.

You guys with this taste in ghostly horror need to check out the following movies:

                            Ringu and Ringu 0
Dark Water (you may enjoy the US remake, but I thought the original was far better)
                            Shutter
A Tale of Two Sisters (or the US remake The Uninvited, they are both pretty good, with the original being superior, but different enough to be viewed separately quite easily)
                            Cello
                            The Maid
                            One Missed Call 1&2
                            The Locker 1&2
                            The Eye 1&2
                            JuOn 1&2

Yes, all of the movies I just suggested are foreign/Asian horror, not the American remakes. Although, in some cases the American remakes are just as good, they many times have a tendency to be more graphic in their violence. In the cases where this is not so much so, I have also listed the remake.

Yes! And I really do appreciate the fact that a great many of these Asian horror films do not feel the need to kill the sense of horror with needless exposition explaining everthing away. Sometimes what you cannot even begin to fathom is much more horrifying than knowing that the kid and cat merged into a terrifying demonic entity due to the forbidden magic spell conjured up on the moment of their death etc etc. It's more like HOLY SMOKES THAT PALE KID MATERIALIZED OUT OF NO WHERE HISSING LIKE A CAT ***?
