I can honestly say that the ending of this film disturbed me on levels no other movie has been able to do. I can't watch it again and I wouldn't if I could. It affected me that badly. Most people might just shrug it off, but I can't.
The ending was my complaint as well. I do not necessarily need a happy ending on every movie I watch. Gladiator is one of my favorite movies, if not THE favorite (with Halloween), and it did not have a happy ending (well I guess is sorta did, kind of a melancholy ending). The ending of this one didn't make a whole lot of sense (how big of a deal would it have been to wait a few more minutes before doing what they did?) and it ruined the movie for me. It was never going to win any academy awards, but it would be in my collection if they would have handled the ending a bit differently
I walked away shocked at the movie theater after I saw it. I love Stephen King stuff - and this is one of the best movie adaptations in my opinion.
I just liked the over all feel of the movie - the creatures did look like something out of a bad nightmare - the religious "stand-off" created a lot of tension - and the ending was like nothing else.
I've seen it 2 or 3 times - and the ending still gets me every time.
You echoed my opinion completely. The ending just wasn't handled quite right and it undermined the rest of the movie.

The ending does make sense. They drove on a full tank of gas - that's hours. Hours of seeing nothing but mist, assuming that the mist covers the whole world, and there's no civilization left. And now, they're stuck in the mist and out of gas. Their solution at the end makes perfect sense in that context. Where the movie screwed up was not showing us that, which is why it felt like a rash, poorly though out decision. I don't think it was. Just incredibly poor timing, which is why for me it's such an effective horror film ending.

I can definitely understand that. However, if that was you, and considering how important at least one of the final people were to him, wouldn't you have waited until the LAST POSSIBLE SECOND to do what he did? I guess that is easy for me to say as I know what happens next and would not in that situation. However, I still think I would have waited a little longer.
