I remember going to see Jaws 3D at the Shirley Drive-In in Shirley, NY (Long Island). My cousin had just gotten her license and drove us in my uncle's van to the Drive-In. When we got to the entrance booth the cashier told us he would have to explain two things before he took our money:

    #1) "3D does not work on a Drive-In screen"
#2) "there is a hole in the middle of the screen, because we did not tell the people at the 8pm show that 3D does not work on a Drive-In screen. So someone got mad and threw a brick through the screen."

      >So Jaws 2 was clearly a pretty damned good sequel that had all the odds heavily stacked against it.

Yeah. I think one of the OTHER things that worked against it was that the formula from the original was already becoming a cliche by that time, so 2 was seen as another water monster eats people flick.

Great call by Jeannot and another BIG glaring difference between the original and the sequel.
EXACTLY. I think what surprised me right off the bat was how seamless the two fit together. You can watch Jaws and Jaws II together and they flow quite nicely. Clearly hiding the shark would not have worked at all since we know a great white was killing the swimmers. Hiding the shark would have held no story or suspence responsibilities. Quite the contrary. Hiding the shark only would have frustrated viewers. They wanted the pay off and Szwarc delivered. The opening sequence was poetic with the first attack occurring at the wreck of the Orca. It was a reminder that the ocean holds more than one terror for this community. Plus it sets up the story nicely, especially after you see the boats being moved by "something" under the surface that night, and in the morning you see the dorsel fin come up and then sink back down by the shore (which places this shark at the same location and time of the girl who was killed in the opening sequence of the original). Classic camera work and great direction. Szwarz was smart enough to know not to compete with the first one as much as ride the coat tails of what the audience already knew and play on those emotions. I'm so glad the current DVD release has an extensive special features section for Jaws II. Very well deserving.

Agreed MIB, that's exactly why almost all Jaws 2 reviews you find online are reviewers more concerned with being "en vogue" by bashing most every sequel with the same old and tired cliches I mention above and much less concerned with an accurate and intelligent review. All the idiots have to do is watch "The Making Of Jaws 2" on the DVD and they would see most every piece of info in their supposed Jaws 2 film reviews are completely false.
Oh, and the fin in Amity Harbor in Jaws 2 was not the location where Chrissie was attacked in the first film. She was attacked in area on called Cow's Bay, the fin came up in Edgartown Harbor.
