So this movie is now hitting streaming, Hulu among others and it's definitely worth a watch if you like Hellboy or horror movies.
The 2019 Hellboy remake was dreadful. Nothing worked. It had a decent budget and a big push and it was a mess.
This movie largely came out of nowhere as no one seemed to know it was even being made until a trailer dropped right before its release date. It was clearly a low budget affair with zero marketing. The trailer looked like a badly edited fan film and I think as a result most people skipped this or assumed it was a cheaper version of the 2019 film.
I'm happy to report it's nothing like that. This is a really solid, really good Hellboy film. While it doesn't attach itself to the continuity of the del Toro films, it could easily fit into that universe. It a pretty faithful adaptation of genuine Hellboy material, but doesn't do anything over the top to get there. This is classic Hellboy. Investigates weird stuff, battles supernatural entities.
There are zero stars in this. But outside of a couple of shots early on of some cheap CGI (not 90s bad or anything) the movie is really well done, atmospheric and full of good practical effects. The new Hellboy isn't Ron Pearlman by any stretch of the imagination, but he doesn't try to be. He also doesn't do anything to go out of his way to differentiate himself. He's a pretty faithful adaptation of the comic Hellboy which obviously the Pealman Hellboy was heavily based on. So it's a nice seamless fit.
It's not the most exciting or thrilling movie in the world, but if you like Hellboy and want to watch a Hellboy movie where he's actually doing Hellboy stuff as opposed to saving the entire world from a world ending event, give this film a chance.
Likewise, if you want some more Hellboy films that akin to this, check out the two animated Hellboy films that were spinoffs of the del Toro films fearturing Pearlman and others returning to voice their characters. They are called Sword of Storms and Blood and Iron. Both worth a watch!
