Hallmark started going over into licensed characters with stuff that made sense, like the Peanuts and Muppets, who had Christmas specials. At some point, they branched out into non-holiday themed ornaments, and other companies followed. Our tree is mostly traditional but everyone gets a new ornament every years, and it's usually a favorite character. We have lots of super heroes on our tree.
