the Bermuda depths official dvd release

in addition to don't be afraid of the dark, the Warner Bro archives released the great rankin/bass film The bermuda depths. The runtime list it as 98 mins which would mean it is fully uncut.

I ordered the disc the other day and can do a full verification if anything is missing once it comes in

Is that the one with the giant sized prehistoric turtle?

I was scared spitless by that movie as a teenager, and they never repeated it on TV!

What was cut from the way it was aired? And I believe it was shown more then one time. I saw it once as a kid, i believe someone had it on in the 90's.

I worked with Rankin bass's historian and biographer Rick Goldschmidt in compliling a bermuda depths composite

the very rare original vhs tape looked better than the tv prints but was cut down to 92 mins (read the alt versions on the imdb, I wrote that all up)

We found a very good tv print (Rick's own copy, as I had several) and I made the composite. The composite was made mainly to give the viewer the best looking picture possible with what we had to work with. This meant using the tv edition as little as
possible and just to fill in the missing gaps from the cut vhs tape

Getting back to answering your question, most tv prints were fully complete or if anything missing few seconds or minutes here and there, but the quality on them was not as good as the original vhs release

the film was shown on tv very often with at least one airing in 1989/1990 before it dropped out completely from the airwaves

either way I am truly hoping I can retire the composite print I made and will know soon enough

sometimes WB will move the archive items on the web and the old links are no longer valid. I edited my first post and this should now bring you directly to it without a problem

Did you get the DVD yet? I am curious about the quality. I am wondering if they just transfer from a VHS master to DVD or if the video quality is better. There are a few other titles there I'd like to get that I already have on VHS and if the video is better, I will get them. However, if they are just using a VHS to make the DVD's, I could do that myself.

WB are using their own film prints in the vaults for these dvds. The catch is no extras and no real time in restoring them. This is the only way they can release this huge amount of films that may never have ever seen the light of day again.

So far though their track record is amazing and even for a general transfer it has been destroying previous vhs/laser edition in terms of quality. ALso if it is a widescreen film, they are releasing it as such. Bermuda depths was apparently shot full frame open matte. The rare and horrible looking French vhs tape offers the film in widescreen but it turns out it is just a matted full frame pic. The WB from what I have seen is having the BD as the proper full frame ratio

I ordered the disc on the 4th and they are giving me an arrival date of the 19th

dvd arrived!!!! I am writing up a short article about the film and review for the Warner disc for the next upcoming issue of G-fan.

So not to repeat what is going to be in the article, I can tell you this

                          1. Completely UNCUT
                          2. BLOWS AWAY any previous vhs/tv print you can find in terms of quality. Though some of the darker scenes have a bit more grain then I would care for
                          3. FULL frame and so far things are pointing to this film being shot in a full frame open matte ratio. This version gives you more pic on all sides than any tv or vhs edition

                          GET THE DVD!!!!

Just got my DVD as well, along with another movie I had been searching for, Carny. Picture quality is very good. However, one note, they are DVD-R's and not pressed from a DVD master. The DVD-R's use a dye on the recordable side that is much more fragile than a DVD that is pressed from a master. Scratches affect playback much easier and the dye does erode over time. We use them for archiving our files and we have DVD-R's we burned as little as 5 years ago that we have problems retrieving files from. Not that I'd recommend against buying movies from there, but it is something to be aware of.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you. Using good media does not erode over time and in fact has been alledged to last longer than it's pressed counterpart.

Using garbage media will or can only last a very short time. You have not specified what media you were using but chances are it was low grade generic crap. Brand name means nothing. It is the media code assigned to the blanks you are using that will tell everything, as all majors (except taiyo yuden who is top of the line) out source to different plants at some time or another.

This is more so true especially with lines like this

burner, media type and overall conditions your dvdr may or may not be exposed to all play a role. However your case strongly sounds like a cheap media issue

I hate to sound like a prick with this, but your comments about dvd-r media are equalivelant to the old Salem Witch Hunts

Warner also has it listed all over that it is a burn on demand service and dvdr media is being used. If someone fails to see that info and they have a problem with it, they need to pay more attention to what they are looking at on the screen
