I'm not sure I've noticed this PAL speed-up that you guys are talking about. I watch PAL dvds on my computer, although I imagine they would play just as readily on a region-free dvd player connected to a N.A. TV set. Is it that the sets aren't compatible?

Film is shot at 24 frames per second, while a PAL signal displays at 25 frames per second, resulting in a 6% speedup. This amount isn't significant, so most people don't notice, but some people (like me) can detect the slightly sped up audio, resulting in voices that are higher pitched than normal, and familiar music cues sounding faster than they should.
Not all region free DVD players can play PAL discs. DVD regions and NTSC/PAL are two different issues. But many region free players are able to convert PAL signals to NTSC (some do a better job than others). Multi system TVs that can accept either type of signal are common in most of the world, but not so much in North America, most TVs people have here can't display PAL signals. Computers can do so with no problem though.Comment

See that's interesting. I didn't know that PAL signals play like that. I knew that NTSC and PAL differences weren't the same as region coding, more to do with standards of resolution and so forth. How did they come up with a display time of 25 frames? That's weird. Is/was the film photographed at 25 frames on British cameras?Comment

here this will tell you everything you need to know
sometimes I can hear the pal speed up (I heard this on a fanedit for star trek), but most of the time it is subtle. Windvd (pc) is one of the few apps out there that will play back a PAL disc with it's ntsc true running time so you have no speed up sound at all. I forgot the name of the special option it is called, but not many apps or pieces of hardware can do this feature"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"
