    Godzilla newer movies question

Just watched Godzilla, Mothra, king Gidorah: All out giant monsters attack (man, what a mess of a title) and was trying to figure out where it sits continuity wise, and which other movies fall in line with this one. It was basically the Toho version of a continuity reset with this being the return of Godzilla after 50 years.

With the more recent Godzilla movies, it's best not to think too much about continuity. Toho tended to reset it after every other movie. They work much better if you just enjoy each movie as a separate entity.

I liked that particular movie a lot and was wondering if they picked up on the beating heart of Godzilla at the bottom of the sea later.

Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
          Lo they do call me.

Big coincidence: I just watched the same Gozilla movie. I don't think there's a continuity. I thought it was a lot of fun, BTW.

Toho hasn't involved Godzilla in more than a two film run with the same continuity since 1995. "GMK", which is easier to type than the full literal English translation of the film, is completely stand alone in continuity. It's unusual as it has Godzilla as the "bad guy" and King Ghidorah (teamed up with Mothra and Baragon) as one of the "good guys".

Yeah the one where Godzilla is possessed of the souls of Japans WWII dead is a seperate continuity. Godzilla is evil Mothera, Gidorha and Baragon are the forces of nature/good. (Godzillas all white eyes were really creepy in this)

I though the ongoing storyline followed Godzilla Sr meltdown and Godzilla Jr absorbing the radiation and taking the big guys place.

Yeah, I like that look for Godzilla, he looks much more sinister.

That's how GODZILLA VS. DESTROYER seemed to end, but when the next Godzilla film finally showed up five years later, Toho seemed to just go with a reboot instead (and have done so every one or two films since).

Toho cares little about sticking to a timeline or continuity.
They do have three distinct eras, in which some sort of continuity is applied.
SHOWA, from the original movie to Terror of Mechagodzilla (1954-75)
HEISEI, from Return of Godzilla to Destroyer (1984-95)
And MILLENNIUM, ending in Final Wars (1999-2004).

Final Wars wasn't exactly all that great, many Kaiju only had about half a minute of screen time, and too much was all about the director really wanting to do a martial arts film instead.
I LOVED the fact that they destroyed Emmerichosaurus (American "Godzilla") in two seconds flat!

Tried looking up info on the Big G vrs American G. Guess his official name in Japan is just zilla. Nice little clip of the whole 2 second battle on youtube.

Now if he Big G could only step on Matthew Brodderick the whole affair could be put to rest.

Don't worry. If being married to Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't kill him, being breathed upon by "Godzilla's" atomic breath (with only a foot between them) should nuke him out of existance for sure......

                              Hmmmm....

Godzilla's continuity is almost as messed up as Wolverine's.... The original ones are all pretty much one continuity; although the tone changed during the original run, and they jump back and forth in time. Godzilla/Godzilla 1985 is a remake of the original, and the 90's movies acontinue from it. Then after Godzilla 2000 they sorta establish a few different timelines.... Godzilla: Final Wars is pretty much a remake of Destroy All Monsters; and kinda puts a bow on the whole thing. At least for a while.

                              Don C.
