Finally got around to seeing this and I was really surprised. I didn't realize it was directed by the same guy that did Shawshank and Green Mile. Between his adaptation and the quality of the acting, this movie really elevated itself from the run of the mill Spam in the Can Horror film it might have been.

Thomas Jane turned in a really surprisingly effective performance.
Loved the guy who played Ollie. The Pharmacy scene kicked some ***. Old lady with the aerosol flame-thrower.
Weird to see Davis/Doomsday in this film. He just didn't seem to fit other than to provide an odd explanation for the event that might have been more disturbing if it wasn't quite so explicitly stated as "Science Gone Wrong", but I guess it served to counterpoint the religious fervor.
Ending was really surprising compared to the novella.Comment

If only the people in the store would have just helped that poor lady get home to her kids it would have turned out differently...“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”Comment

Hmmmm....
I thought it was okay. A lot of the character conflicts seemed to come out of left field to me, but the monsters were neat; and that's what's REALLY important.
I mentioned before that the overall idea seemed REALLY similar to the "Living Land" from the Torg RPG. Anyone know when the original story was written?

I liked it a lot, except for the ending.
I didn't mind it being grim, or the deaths involved.
I just think the lead's decision to kill his son was too abrupt.
I would have waited until the last second, until monsters were crawling over the hood of the car. And maybe then, I'd still struggle.
I don't think a devoted father would sit there, at a time when the car is still not under attack, and shoot his son.
I wish they would have lenghtened that scene, building tension, getting the car overrun by monsters, and only then.....
Other than that: excellent movie, mostly about human psychology, and how easily we abandon civilisation for barbarism.....

A lot of people I know felt that way. I was okay with it, 'cos I didn't see it as an abrupt decision, given the events of the rest of the film. They'd been driving for however long, after fighting off a horde of beasties, and not seeing any sign that there was a safe haven.
>mostly about human psychology, and how easily we abandon civilisation for barbarism
THAT was the part that bothered me. It seemed like the animosity at the beginnig came out of nowhere. I've been told that the story explains it better; how the townies don't care for the seasonals, etc. But to me (having not read the story) it looked like there were a lot of folks in that town who needed to cut back on the coffee.

I sure was happy when the trouble-maker in the store was blown off her soap-box though! Hallelujah indeed!MY GODS ARE SMALL...... AND PLASTIC!

I haven't seen the movie yet but is this an adaptation of one of his real early short stories that was either called "the mist" or "the fog". I haven't read it in about 20 or so years but remember it was one of his better short stories."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

the ending was a gut puncher. he should have waited longer. Those who look outside dream. Those who look within awake.
