Thanks for all the suggestions! This'll give me some things to look out for at the bookstore. I kind of wish there were good kiddie books of a geekish nature--Ie Star Wars or Superheroes, but the few that I've seen are so lame and unimaginative it kind of makes me mad. I wish they'd put that Batman from Alfred to Zowee book in board form.

I always went with the classics.....Dr. Seuss' "Hop on Pop" and "I Wish That I Had Duck Feet" were two favorites...the Gingerbread Man was always a crowd pleaser....and "The Story of A Duck Named Ping".Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment

Oh how could I forget that one! I used to read that to my kids....I still have my original book my kindergarten teacher gave me. The sequel with Grover and Elmo (Another Monster at the End of This Book) pales in comparision. (Of course I lead an anti-Elmo regime in our household)Think OUTSIDE the Box! I like the suggestion of going to the library and scouting the kiddie section, Scott. That way, you can preview the books yourself before you buy. My wife takes John to the library regularly. We've worn out some library books he's loved very much, so we ended up buying a few of them from Amazon.
Not a board book, but this is a book from our library that my son loved from about 18 months, so we went out and bought it. It helps if you can sing:
Amazon.com: What a Wonderful World (Jean Karl Books): George David Weiss, Bob Thiele, Ashley Bryan: Books
Other books I recommend:
Bear Snores On (and others in the series)
anything by P.K. Hallinan like this one:
Amazon.com: ABC I Love You: P. K. Hallinan: Books
We're Going on a Bear Hunt
God Made You Nose to Toes

It's been such a long time since I have read these books to my kids now that they are getting older.
A couple that I remember reading that my kids really liked and I also enjoyed (I apologize in advance if I can't remember the exact name of the author or book).
"How Much I Love You"...I think someone already mentioned it...great book
I think this is by Sandra Boynton (sp?) but is a book about colors...I just remember it has a nice rhythm to it. Green shorts, Red Hat, Yellow Top, Oops! Something like that.
Dr. Seuss is great but I remember my kids took a great liking to one he wrote that isn't quite as popular or well known as his others "Gerald McBoing Boing" Really nice rhythm and you can really act it out.
Another recommendation is a book I believe is called "No Daniel" about a mischievous boy who is always getting in trouble for doing something not terribly bad but little things here and there....I just remember at the end of the book after about his 20th time of doing something wrong and his parents telling him no, they give him a big hug and tell them they love him. I really like the illustrations as well."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

There's this book I had as a kid that my friend's one year old girl likes
it's called "PAT THE BUNNY"
It's pretty corny---so you might not like it because of that----
BUT the plus side is that it's very "interactive" with things
for the kids to feel----like a bunny's fur (synthetic fur in the book)
or daddy's beard (sandpaper material in the book)
and things like a mirror for your kid to look at himself---and more stuff too.
I think it's a great choice, personally."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment

Hey Scott,
I was in Lakeshore Ave. Walgreen's this morning and spotted some nice board books. Some of them come w/ CDs like nursery rhymes. A couple had a squeaky toy attached. One was shaped like a truck, and there was one or two Elmo books.
Just thought you might wanna go check'em out."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

My son loved the Ruth Brown books when he was little (Dark Dark Tale and Toad especially) but those are softcovers.
He was also big on the Max bookes by Rosemary Wells.
Someone got us "Love You Forever". We read it once and neither my wife or I could take reading it again. It's pretty emotionally intense.Comment
