Overstock in CDs. Help me sell them!

I seem to have met some people on here that are oddly into the type of music that one of my bands plays.

    So here is the story...

My band Fatal Agenda had a really stupid management and they ordered thousands of CDS of our latest album from awhile ago. I still have warehouses and rooms filled with these things.

If you like fast, heavy and aggressive metal (Slayer, Kreator, Overkill..etc) please feel free to get some of these off my hands.

Here is the link to getting the CD for your collection...

We have sold about 200 copies through Myspace. I think that is probably the limit we are going to have with that.

Is your group still playing? If so, maybe you could take them to your concerts and sell them at a discounted price just to get rid of them.

You might have to sell them at a loss but at least you can recoup some of your investment.

Yep. We did all that to.

When you order thousands of CDs. You are still going to have left overs.

Unfortunatley the lead singer got stuck with the left overs.

Just out of curiousity, why would your manager have ordered so many?

Was there some kind of minimum quantity that needed to be ordered or were there any plans to distribute them through a national chain that fell through?

I guess the only other think to do is to seek out a retail chain that specializes in selling this type of music and see if you can distribute it with them. You could also list them on Amazon.com by setting up a small shop. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas on how to sell the thousands that are left. Sounds like someone is out a lot of money.

Well, that my friend is a whole story on its own. Let me try and sum it up in two paragraphs. My band mates could probably write a book about this story it is so funny and odd.

Our management was a novice. (We didn't know it at the time though) They had a woman named Rhonda that worked with their management. She was an awkward shaped skinny lady, with a big rump and a sideways Marg Simpson hair do. You could easily make a cartoon character from her. To this day, I don't know why she was put in charge of our band. When we finished the CD she said, "Ok. I am gonna take the CD to the place that mass produces the CDs. I will just put it on my credit card and you guys can pay me back with all the CD sales."

The next morning Rhonda pulls up with her friend driving a green truck. They start unloading boxes in my garage. There must have been about fifteen boxes. After they left, I got some coffee in me and went to inspect the boxes. To my shock, there was a total of 1,500 CDs. I don't think she realized what she was doing.

Truth. I don't think our band knows at least two hundred people. I told her it was way too much, and of course there was nothing she could do the damage was already done.

Ugh. We later wound up firing her. She just wasn't band material. She went up to the owner/booker at Big E's Beach Club in Edgerton and chewed him out for not advertising a show (the place had about six people in it). Of course that pretty much sealed our fate there. The place was a craphole anyway but it is just the idea that someone burned "a bridge" that didn't need to be burned.

She never did make her money back. She tried to sue one of the other guys that ran the management company and they laughed at her. It was totally her idea to order a 1,500 CDs. It was never taken to court. I called my grandfather's lawyer and he gave me advice to give her about some tax write off thing. Not sure if she used it. I have never heard from her again. She did all though keep two boxes for some reason. She thought she could sell them. LOL

On the positive side. I have put them all over the internet and sold them all over the world to metal heads everywhere. The idea of my name being on a CD that is being sent to Europe is cool with me.

We have sold a big chunk of the CDs but we still have plenty more to get rid of. So that is why I am trying to sell them on a Mego board. I have literally been everywhere. It is not bad music. It is metal! The way Fatal Agenda is.

Well, if you are not out any money, why not just give them away for free?

Could be a good way to promote your band and help you sell a future CD if you decide to release one. Sounds like they are taking up space without really any takers and if you are not out any money, use it as a promotional tool.

You could call up local heavy metal stations and donate some for contest prizes, I know most larger college campuses have small radio stations that are just broadcast on campus and I'm sure they'd be happy to use some as contest prizes.

Just some thoughts. Like I said, if you aren't out any money, why not just give them away as a promotional tool to hopefully reel in some new fans?

Yeah. There are about two or three boxes with no CD inserts (because we did them ourselves and ran out of funds). I might take the ones with just the CD and clear jewel case and slip a small business card in there and hand them out.

That's what I'd do. Use it as a tool to bring in new fans, send your cd's to venues where you could potentially play who haven't booked before to see if they would be interested.

If you think of it that way, you may end up making it up big time on the back end and since you're not out any money....all the better.

As a side note, I think the lawyer was suggesting that the manager could write the cost of the cd's off as a business loss since she is in that line of work and had intended to profit from them. It's perfectly acceptable but she needs to go talk to her own tax advisor about that issue.

Right! That is exactly what he said! I couldn't think of the words! I am not really sure what happened to Rhonda. Last I heard she was out of the band business and trying to open up a road side ice cream place. (serious).
