Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan

Japanese Brazilian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It just dawn on me because I saw Japanese table tennis players representing Brazil in the Olympics, and the announcers mentioned that bit of information.

Did any of you guys knew that?

    Me neither.

Nope. Can't says I did. I did see some info on one of the athlete runners yesterday. All I can remember off the top of my head is that her name was "Damu". Yes, That name stuck out for a reason to me I suppose. Even though it is pronounced Damoo and not Damn you. Anywho (no pun intended) I seen that she lives in New York and went to school in Illinois. Apparently been in the U.S.A. some and now represents Sweden. Hmmm...What did we ever do to her to deserve that?

I knew it, but then again, I know a lot of obscure Japanese trivia because that's where my wife is from.

Yup, I knew about it. There is also a large Japanese population in Peru.

It really isn't unusual to have dual citizenship and to compete for a country other than where you reside. There was a player on Germany's basketball team who was from the USA, didn't speak any German, and had never visited Germany but was playing for the team because he had zero chance of representing the USA. I also saw someone, I believe running in the 1500 M from Kenya and even represented Kenya in a previous olympics but is now a U.S. citizen and competing for USA....very confusing.

If I'm not mistaken, soccer is one of very few sports where you can't switch countries. For example, I think Freddy Adu was actually born in Ghana and has dual citizenship but spent most of his life in the U.S. Since he has played for the U.S National Team, at no time could he play for the Ghana National Team. Apparently, there is an excellent up and coming player who has spent his entire life in the U.S. but decided to play soccer for the Netherlands (who can blame him?). Now he can't switch back and personally I like that rule.

Regarding the main subject, I definitely thought that the U.S. would have had the 2nd highest Japanese population in the world.

Yes, I knew that. There is a large Japanese population in Peru, too. They had an ethnic Japanese President, Alberto Kenya Fujimori. He was born there, but fled to Japan under a cloud of controversy, and allegations of corruption. Interesting that ethnic Japanese the world over retain the option of citizenship in Japan.

It kind of sheds a light on the WWII Japanese Internment Camps here in Canada, and Canadians like Kanao Inouye (The Kamloops Kid).
