I think I'm going to purchase a Blu-Ray this Christmas. I finally purchased an HDTV but have not tried to see what a standard DVD looks like because I have had so much fun watching the Olympics and other shows in HD.

I also have a huge collection of DVD's with a lot of stuff that I don't imagine will ever be produced in Blu-ray or at least not for a long time since they are documentaries and not big release titles. I thought about purchasing an upconverter but a decent one is about $150 and I figured for $300, I might as well just buy the Blu-Ray and I can use it as an upconverter plus purchase newer releases in blu-ray format.

Plus I have a $125 gift card from Amazon.com which is just aching to be spent so I can stomach the price a little more.

Wow! Thats a nice collection. I like your taste in DVDs. I have alot of the ones you got. I'm also not into the Blueray idea either. I really don't like there prices and alot of the stuff I like isn't even on that format.

quickly as I am running late...I went HD and BluRay. Both formats have pros and cons.
If you expect to go into the HD world and be blown away, keep expectations average.
It is awesome what the industry can do...the Blade Runner Collector pack is a prime example. They scanned it at 4K, cleaned it up and color corrected it. Blade Runner on HD/Blu Ray looks freakin unbelievable.
However, not all hd/blu ray discs are receiving that attention.
Case in point, I sat months waiting for something to happen after HD's fall...I buy 2-3 dvd's per week and opted not to buy anything due to an unforseen future, then high prices of blu ray.
well, working 2 jobs right now, i just couldn't take it anymore and bought blu ray. I bought Predator, Halloween (Carpenter's version) and Terminator 2. Predator's video quality is HORRIBLE. I mean, down right dirty fuzzy nasty. I'd rather put in my VHS. Halloween looks unbelievably awesome...a great transfer.
Sure, these older shows weren't filmed with HD cameras...so what. What bothers me is the Blu Ray marketing. Some novice is going to spend $350 on a player and take home Predator and then start bad mouthing the quality...and that person is justified in doing so.
I have decided, the only blu ray discs i will buy, that dates pre-2002ish...I will thouroughly Google and read reviews first. Had I done so, I would have found others complaining about Predator.
I long for the day when the industry gets off their booty and gives each Blu Ray title released, the grand attention Blade Runner and Halloween received...anything less and it isn't worth buying....the upconvert of our regular dvds looks equally good.

Well I'm going Blueray(PS3)...but it also plays Your old DVD's. I have alot of DVD's as well...but only plan on replacing two or three.
It's only worth replacing it....if it's a fairly new Movie anyway....as they can only do so much to "remaster" them. Film grain is inherent to Flim...but what happens is, they try to clean them up TOO MUCH....so that they end up scrubbing(blurrying)the Picture....trying to wash out the grainyness....and that's not a good thing.

But new Movies like "300"...shot with a Digital Camera....look absolutely AMAZING on Blueray...on a 1080p LCD Screen!

I cannot get enthusiastic about Blu-Ray. I own one... The Fifth Element, pretty much so I could watch Milla Jovovich running around in that white strappy number. I have a few HD-DVDs, though, but not many... rushed out and bought the Bladerunner set when it came out, watched one disk once and that was it. I bought several more when Hollywood Video was closing them out (300, V for Vendetta, Superman Returns, Beowulf, plus a few others), but ended up not watching about half of them. I never opened the five free HD-DVDs I got with the player, either.

I think I'm at the point in my life where I've become my parents. I just don't feel the need anymore to rush out and buy movies that I like, because it's kind of absurd to spend that money, watch it once, and throw it on a pile, and have that pile grow and grow until it takes over my life. It makes me feel like a huge sucker to buy a bunch of VHS movies, then DVDs, and now I'm supposed to replace everything on yet another format that will probably be replaced in five to ten years. Same with CDs. I can't remember the last one I bought.

I'd much rather just catch things on cable or Tivo movies than have this physical thing cluttering up my life.

Which one did you get? The original Blu-ray release was an inferior, botched transfer, it didn't look much better than DVD. After many complaints, Sony did a remastered Blu-ray last year, and that one looks fantastic.

I understand where you are coming from in your post though. It's in the studios' best interests to keep people rebuying their collections in new formats so that they can continue to make money. And dammit, I'm such a film geek, and tech geek, I keep falling for it. I can't help it!

Can you watch regular home burned DVD's on a Blue Ray ?

Also, can a person buy a Blue Ray burner ?

If not, then to me they're useless.

Curently you can only get a burner in a PC.
                      Burned disc will play.

I'm pretty sure I got the newer version. I just bought it like two or three months ago, and it looks great.

Yes and yes, so they are not useless. (blank Blu-ray discs currently cost an arm and a leg though, so that really has to change before I buy a burner)

LOL...as I said thats just a third of my collection..there's some shelves in the boys room with all the kids films and bond movies (about another 100 or so), my daughter has bagged most of the comedies and girly type movies (about another 100), then there's all the Who, Star Wars, trek and sci-fi tv on some more shelves in the hall (200 more) and 6 crates worth on top of wardrobes and cupboards (about 500 more)...then there's the "Ahem" unboxed films...that are in 4 cases (700 more at least).
I have a projector and screen that give me great quality (as the dvd player goes directly through the projector), so may well hold off buying a blu-ray until the prices drop considerably.
