    HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of who is the "best Penguin"---I'm not even sure
if I'd say Meredith had anything on DeVito----love his portrayal.

Oh----what was this thread about again?

Predictably perhaps, I'm going with Heath. He nails the character's essence in a way that no one has ever really captured (except Mark, which see below).

Jack was a little too silly, and kinda portly, and too old, really, to "feel" like the Joker of the comics.

Cesar was perfect for his era, but now he seems dated and goofy.

Mark's voice work is spot-on, although the limitations of TV animation (as in not being able to kill) prevent him from being as psycopathic as the modern Joker really is. That said, the direct-to-video movies Superman & Batman and The Return of the Joker feature Mark doing his maniacal, homicidal best!

        Here's my opinion .........

Bare in mind I never seen this movie .........

        Cesar was/is KING

C'mon Cesar is the real joker

All of a sudden i'm being told he's not anymore.

I think i'm just getting too old.

I like who I like --- you like who you like

Of course! That's what message boards are all about: expressing (and defending) our opinions! I personally think Cesar no longer represents the "real" Joker of the comics that I've been reading since about 1976. But he's PERFECT as the Silver Age Joker from the 50s and early 60s! So no worries, man. Enjoy!

Mike---you MUST be getting old----because you're showing signs of senility

You say you don't "see" how Ledger (oh so callously referred
to as "the new dead guy") is better than a 60s actor who portrayed
the Joker in a relatively one dimensional way---

              yet...

you haven't even SEEN Ledger in the role.

I mean, yeah Mike----you're King Cat around here and all, but put
some effort and some TACT in, my man

And, I'll add about Nicholson's great portrayal---the old adage that
Nicholson could play a three year old girl and STILL be successful
applies to his JOKER role in spades.

Nicholson made that role his---owned it----no matter WHAT his age
              or appearance----

That alone disqualifies you from making an opinion on this subject.

                Thank you and good night.

Cesar was the first and only Joker we had as kids (aside from the Mego Joker, of course!), so that counts for alot. His look, voice and portrayal of the character is iconic, and will live in all our hearts as "the original" for decades to come.

But if you've read DC comics since the 70s, the Joker has evolved into a more sinister personage, a psychopathic killer who is less goofy and less broadly comic than Cesar's characterization. Alan Moore's graphic novel The Killing Joke is the quintessential representation of this character.

It's THIS Joker of the comics of the last 30+ years that fans have wanted to see in a film version... and Heath crystallizes that version (apart from his sloppy make-up and weird scars, which make him unique).
