Roger Waters or David Gilmour ?

Most of you know my feelings about Syd Barrett.

Most people say Pink Floyd didn't officially get off the ground until their "Breakthrough era: 1971–1975".

So, who is your cup of Tea?

    Roger Waters

    David Gilmour

I pick David Gilmour. He was Pink Floyd in my book.

If you don't know what I am talking about, please don't respond to this thread. I want to keep this on a levelheaded discussion about Pink Floyd.

Definitely more of a Gilmour man. As a guitarist myself, he is one of the few players who really grabs my attention. There is no denying Waters contributions to the group though and many fans feel Floyd died when he left.
Of all the souls I have encountered his was the most...human.

I just picked up David Gilmour's latest, "On an Island". Just listening to it pretty much confirms in my mind who the man behind the Pink Floyd was.

Roger Waters was a good story teller and from what I have read is completey insane and lacks the conscious to break away from topics and go onto something new.

Take a listen to Pink Floyd's "Final Cut" (it was said to be Roger Water's last big effort with Pink Floyd. From what I read Waters wanted to keep writing in the form of "The Wall" and the band basically booted him because he couldn't shake the setting.

It be like watching those old Ironman cartoons from the 90s where you always knew who the villain was, surprise! Mandarin!!!

It took two to tango...Gilmour and Waters were BOTH Pink Floyd...had one been missing since the beginning...you wouldn't have the distinct Pink Floyd sound we all love and know today.

That goes for the other original members as well.

It's kinda like who was more Queen...Freddie Mercury or Brian May?

Mercury with his distinct Queen voice or May with his unique signature Queen guitar riff?

They both wrote about the same number of songs between them.

Both were equal in Queen...like I said, it takes two to tango.

I own and know Roger's solo work much better, I've never had a sense of Gilmour as anything other than a great guitarist. I have a love/hate thing with Roger. His stuff had a huge influence on me as a teenager and I'm kind of embarrassed by his appeal to my melodramatic side. More and more he writes songs as if he's reading them directly from the foreign affairs section of the newspaper, too literal and lacking the poetry of his earlier stuff.

They should get over themselves and go on tour and make a bloody fortune. I saw Water's solo show a few years ago and it was just kind of lacking that special something.

In the case of the Beatles, it took three to tango.

                    Sorry Ringo, lol.

Ok, give it to me...FLAME ON!!!!!

                      Gilmour vs Waters ?

                      No way ...........

Both these guys made Floyd what they are ........

To me, they're both great on an equal level

Syd was a greater songwriter than both of them combined.

                          Syd was cool .....
But his drug induced nonsense songs would have taken them only so far.

IMO, if Syd was still in the band circa late 1968 , ........ Floyd would have been finished at that point.

Gilmour AND Water saved the band

They not only saved it, they made it something special --imo

Well of course, Syd had to go. He was out of his mind. Although his solo records are superb. I like the first few post Syd Floyd releases through the early 70's (Meddle rules!). But after a while Pink Floyd becomes boring arena rock. If "special" means over-bloated and too self-important then I guess I agree with you......

                              Gilmour

For me its Gilmour for sure! The Floyd cd's without Waters were well made. I didnt care for much of Waters solo stuff. Only pros & cons is so , so to me.

But I wish these guys would just do a world tour and farewell studio cd for the fans.
