I'm sure that's a great comfort to the thousands of poor Chinese who were deported to make room for the event.
They'll be cheering all the way in their cardboard boxes.

Sorry, can't help being sarcastic about it.
    Seeen to many documentaries...

I didn't really care for the announcers when the parade of countries came through though. Who are they to say that so and so country is competing but are not expected to win? That's their personal opinion. Just for that, I am rooting for those underdog countries!

I can't wait for ping pong and I hope it gets a lot of coverage.

I wasn't going to watch but my dad telephoned and made me turn the tv. I'm glad I am seeing it now. Very impressive. Very colorful and dramatic. The costumes, the stadium, the electricity/engineering that went into the show...wow.

Our opening performance will consist of 300 teenagers each with a bottle of beer in hand walking to the centre of the stadium and throwing up.

Did you know that restaurants around the Olympic Arena are forbidden to serve dog during the next weeks?
It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "wokking the dog".

I heard today that the British police are concerned that there are not enough policemen and women in the UK to police the 2012 olympics and that they may have to draft them in from other countries.

I have to agree with you, it was stunning. A massive congrats to everyone who staged and took part in this.

God knows how London is going to match that.

They aren't broadcasting it until tonight. NBC has the rights here in the U.S. and they are not going to broadcast the opening ceremonies until tonight.

I am in awe at the state of the art stadiums that were built for the Olympics. I have heard it said that China wants to make a statement to the rest of the world that they are a world power and not just a country of cheap products and the Olympic games will be their coming out party so to speak.

I don't think they are broadcasting it here in the US until "prime time" this evening. Either that or I missed it.

Aussies have some of the best swimmers in the world...probably between Australia and the U.S. two best swim teams in the world.

It will be interesting to see how the drama unfolds. There is a new Speedo suit that is supposed to be a huge breakthrough in technology and about 50 swimming world records have been broken in the last year or so wearing the suit. I also heard the Olympic Pool in Beijing has some type of technology that causes swimmers to be able to move through the water faster so they are expecting a lot of swimming world records to be broken in Beijing this year.
