E-bay purchases may soon be monitored.

Guys I know we are to stay clear of political talk. However, this is something that needs to be brought to everyones attention. If this bill passes every E-bay, Amazon etc... purchase you make will be logged in a federal database. Looks like a new way to find out who to tax. Please take a few minutes and contact your representatives on this issue.

This story is from World Net Daily.

A freedom-focused grassroots organization has issued a nationwide alert about a plan in Congress that would require credit card companies, eBay, Amazon, Google and other companies to report what you buy to the federal government.

FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey said the privacy implications are "breathtaking."

"This is a provision with astonishing reach, and it was slipped into the bill just this week," he said. "Not only does it affect nearly every credit card transaction in America, such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express, but the bill specifically targets payment systems like eBay's PayPal, Amazon and Google Checkout," he said.

FreedomWorks said the provision is "hidden deep in Sen. Christopher Dodd's 630-page Senate housing legislation." It was added by the bill's managers without debate and calls for a tracking and reporting system "on nearly every electronic transaction."

"Privacy groups like the Center for Democracy and Technology and small business organizations like the NFIB sharply criticized this idea when it first appeared earlier this year," the FreedomWorks statement said.

"What is the federal government's purpose with this kind of detailed data? How will this database be secured, and who will have access? Many small proprietors use their Social Security number as their tax ID. How will their privacy be protected? What compliance costs will this impose on businesses? Why is Sen. Chris Dodd putting this provision in a housing bailout bill? The bill also includes the creation of a new national fingerprint registry for mortgage brokers."

The bill's summary, FreedomWorks said, states:

Payment Card and Third Party Network Information Reporting. The proposal requires information reporting on payment card and third party network transactions. Payment settlement entities, including merchant acquiring banks and third party settlement organizations, or third party payment facilitators acting on their behalf, will be required to report the annual gross amount of reportable transactions to the IRS and to the participating payee. Reportable transactions include any payment card transaction and any third party network transaction. Participating payees include persons who accept a payment card as payment and third party networks who accept payment from a third party settlement organization in settlement of transactions.

"At a time when concerns about both identity theft and government spying are paramount, Congress wants to create a new honey pot of private data that includes Social Security numbers. This bill reduces privacy across America's payment processing systems and treats every American small business or eBay power seller like a criminal on parole by requiring an unprecedented level of reporting to the federal government. This outrageous idea is another reason to delay the housing bailout legislation so that Senators and the public at large have time to examine its full implications," FreedomWorks said.

FreedomWorks is chaired by Armey, the former U.S. House Majority leader, and pursues lower taxes, less government and more freedom by coordinating the work of thousands of grassroots volunteers.

The activist organization is urging Americans to contact their congressmen and object to the plan.

There are some online businesses that are making a killing on eBay. Unfortunatley because of their large profits, Uncle Sam is probably looking into this whole thing to get their share. It is sad that it will probably affect the average Joe that is selling a few items on eBay.
When big money is being made and Uncle Sam isn't getting his cut, you had better believe they will find away to nail your butt. Happens all the time.

I was just counting the days when sites like eBay were going to "get it."

      Here's what I don't understand .......

Basically ebay (for all of us is a fleamarket or garage sale)

We buy used things that had taxes paid on it already -- perhaps 30+ years ago.

No different than a broken lawn mower you gave your neighbour 5 bucks for (to take it off his hands)

Do they want taxes paid on EVERYTHING everytime it changes hands ?

      There's something screwy about this

They can't get fleamarket's and garages sales. If they could, you know Uncle Sam would.
Fortunatley, this is the Internet. The government can get that or at least make a play for it.

It won't be long and the government will own the whole entire Internet.

You might as well get used to it. Things to come in the future.

        It only gets worse!

        Welcome to America!

              Hiya folks,

As a licensed reseller, I can assure you the tax man is interested in all of your transactions. More so, actually, on a state than fed level. Yes, any sale of any item is supposed cough up some to their local comptroller and any person who makes money selling things on ebay is considered taxable as a business (self-proprietor usually) by the feds.

Here is a real kicker for you. According to TX law, if you purchase something from a different state and do not pay any tax on the transaction, you are supposed to report that purchase and send the appropriate tax to the TX comptroller. I would suppose there are similar laws in other states. This makes just about anyone who has purchased anything online a tax evader - read criminal. LOOK OUT

              and have a good time

I mean after the Listing Fee's, the Final Sales Fee's & the Paypal Fee's,.. not to mention Shipping Fee's. .... It just Blows. Uncle Sam should just take a cut from Ebay.

Eventually transactions will go back to place like the marketplace on the museum. Where collectors will just trade amongst themselves.
