Super 8 movies

Besides the usual "home movie" fare, whose family owned Super 8 movies back in the day? The only reason I bring this up is b/c I just spotted this nice POTA Super 8 lot on Ebay:

There's just something about watching a film in this way that beat TV all to heck. Dad setting up the screen, Mom would break out the bowl of Jolly Time, and you'd fight w/ your brother for the best spot on the couch. Sadly, it never occurred to my dad to use our Super 8 projector for anything other than home movies, but there were quite a few of them. I just wish I coulda watched cool movies at home, and not just at the movie theatre.

I actually had a super eight camera that also recorded sound, too. One time I used it to film the opening of Battlestar Galactica off of my family's TV. I don't think that the cost for developing of that film justified my idea of filming an entire episode (3 min. spools at a time), I didn't film off the TV except for that.

Actually, I've been thinking of buying one again. My family and I went to the Bahamas in 1986 and recorded it all on video. A while ago I found a super 8 reel from Tampa, FL...where I lived at the time...on Ebay. It was marked "Bahamas Vacation 1986". I thought it was possible that it was a long lost reel of our family vacation so I bought it.

Its sitting up in my office right now. I don't have a way to play it and see if its us!!!

Super 8 is little pictures like on a view master reel. It isn't a magnetic tape live video tapes.

If it is Super 8, can't you just get a magnifying glass and have a look at the frames to see if it is your family. . . Good luck too. . . but it sounds like a long shot that it would be your family wouldn't it?

My Family had Super 8 camera. . .no sound. . .recorded our early years and funny to watch. COlour silent home movies.

Love the smell of a movie night. . . at least one tape would get stuck and burn every time we did it.

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of movies that weren't home movies, such as the POTA movies on Ebay.

I still have my super-8 camera and projector .......
Camera is a GAF --silent
Projector is a Bell and Howell -- silent

Besides my own movies, I owned a pretty fair amount of bought ones ......

I think I still have a few somewhere around including MASH and Woody Woodpecker.

Worst thing was having to replace the projector bulb.
Cost about $24.00 back in the day .... outrageously expensive.

The only Super 8 movie we had was Dracula with Bela Lugosi (I still have it). I remember a friend of mine had I Was A Teenage Werewolf. I also still have the projector and screen. I'll have to get it out someday and see if it still works.

We had a projector and would sometimes borrow some Super 8 movies from the library (or rented them somewhere, I forget which). I remember watching some Disney cartoons, Abbott and Costello, and one time my uncle got a Super 8 of ALIEN (assorted scenes including the infamous chest bursting scene). I was very excited to finally see some of that film (I was waaaay to young to have seen the R-rated film in theatres at the time) but it scared the crap out of me. I covered my eyes during the chest bursting.

I still have a Super 8 film of scenes from Hammer's CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, that my uncle (again!) gave that to me. What can I say, he was a very cool uncle . I wish I had a projector to play it on.

I remember seeing ads for all the Super 8 genre films in the back of Warren magazines and wishing I could get some. Those pre-video days were a different era, that's for sure.

I've got one of the new projectors and huge screen and the kids still love the thrill of me putting up the screen and watching a film this way....kinda miss the takataka of film running through the projector though...

Worst problem ......

Movies were silent .....
Movies were ALL black and white
Movies ran about 5 minutes

If i'm remembering correctly, they cost about 8 dollars apeice ...

Yeah, nothing beats the theater experience more than a badly edited Super 8 film... Even watching a film on TV doesn't quite capture the magic of a film that is so incomplete it's hard to tell what actually happened...

I still have my Parents projector and my Star Wars and BSG films. There was a cool fan edit where the guy basically put the Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back super 8 reels on DVD. Very cool.
