    New Television Question

Back in 2005-ish my nephew gave me his old flat screen TV when he moved.

It was Insignia brand … Loved that TV but it finally conked out after almost 20 years.

My other nephew found out and surprised me with a new one

Only thing, the new one seems to make all movies (even classic ones) look like they were recorded on video.

Quality of picture is HD or even better, but it's hard to get used to how movies now move like video instead of film.

Was just watching an old film and it felt like I was watching an old Doctor Who.

    Does that make sense ?

Sounds like you're talking about the "soap opera effect". Most modern TV have various visual "enhancements" enabled that are supposed to improve the viewing experience. Unfortunately, they rarely do. Go into the picture settings on your TV and toggle off anything that says "enhanced motion" or "True Motion", or the like.

    That should minimize the effect.

Learn about the soap opera effect (motion interpolation) for reducing motion blur on TVs. See how it works, why it can be controversial and how to disable it.

Yes, exactly that is it. The Doctor Who comment really nailed it for me as to what the problem was. Smoothing, enhanced, true motion, they all essentially give it that British / Soap Opera look. It really sucks for most things, but I found one program that it really looked good one, which is the Star Trek: TNG blu rays. It makes it look like a stage play, if that makes any sense. It really gives the show a completely different / fresh look, which is nice if you’ve already seen the show a few times. I highly recommend it.

          1080p,. 720p, 480p

Maybe the Resolution on each TV is different?

One of the few things I learned in school!

That's how I feel when watching some programs on Me-TV. They use that soap opera look on some of their programs, but I don't mind it if I've already seen the same shows a dozen times, like Lost in Space, for example. Gives it a fresh look like I'm experiencing watching it for the first time.

Decided to leave the Kinescope/Video look for now for sh-ts and giggles.

Just watched Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Was like watching Three's Company with zombies …

I got a big kick out of that for a couple of days, Space:1999 looked like absolute garbage without it's filmic qualities but the CGI from "Escape from LA" (which is not good to begin with) looked like a 90s screen saver.

I'd count yourself lucky you still have family that does nice things for you. Most of my family are users or we aren't on speaking terms. No major reason why either. Guess that's the way the ball bounces.
