Augeri was frying his vocal chords trying to be Steve Perry. Towards the end he was singing into some device during performances that modified his voice as it was amped. He can still sing, but he can't be Steve Perry anymore unless he wants to end up retired with fried vocal chords like Perry. I don't know why Soto is gone, but it's just as well. He's a great vocalist and Steve Perry songs will eat anybody up after awhile.

I'll check out the new CD, but I doubt that I'll buy it. The great Journey songs had something that I haven't heard since before the last Perry album. I haven't really felt any of their later stuff. Something's missing.

I think when a band loses the singer that brought them to fame, they should change the name of the band. On rare occasions it works out, hence Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
      And Van Halen.

When I first became aware of the new Journey with Steve Augeri I was put off. How could they replace Perry? But after viewing the 2001 concert DVD and then seeing them live with Augeri, I accepted him and them as Journey.

Augeri and Pineda are decent enough to replace Perry but they will never match the success of the Perry led Journey.

To my knowledge Perry's vocal chords are not fried. He's done some minor projects for movies and background vocals, all after his departure from Journey. Sadly, he's more of a "recluse" these days though.

Also former members of Journey Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory (both founding members), and Steve Smith joined up with Kevin Chalfant and Josh Ramos to form The Storm in 1991.

OK. I picked up the CD. When I get time, I will play it tonight. You talked me into buying it. My verdict will be soon.

According to Herbie Herbert, they're fried. Did you see him try to sing Don't Stop Believin' when the White Sox won? He can't get anywhere near any of the notes he used to hit on the classic Journey songs. It's like Robert Plant only worse. I heard the backing vocals he did on the Guff remake and I never would have known it was him.

No. I wasn't aware of White Sox thing until I read his Wikipedia entry a few days back. I haven't followed baseball since the strike of '94.

Never heard that either. I did like the two songs he contributed to that "Quest for Camelot" movie. But even after listening to "Trial By Fire" I knew he would never hit the high notes again. I took your "fried" comment to mean he couldn't sing anything anymore. Sorry about that.

Did you happen to see them at the Tabernacle in 98? Great show. With that said, there is only one Steve Perry. All the others are simply imitators.

I believe the official story from Perry is that his voice changed over the years and he doesn't want to become a parody of himself.

As far as hitting the notes. I doubt any singer in his 50s can nail notes quite like he did in his 20s.

Take care of your voice and you can sing just fine.

I'll agree it's easier said than done.

Hey, no biggie. I think Perry would have already gone back if he could do the songs. It's too bad, because in his day he was awesome. I think he really misses performing, but he knows he can't do the songs people want to hear. So yeah, he can still sing, just not the way everyone remembers.
