    The Dark Knight--Spoiler FREE

    MY SPOILER-FREE MINI-REVIEW:

I have never seen a film like this. There has never been a film like this. This isn't about Internet hype -- as in "ZOMG! It's teh best movie ever made!!!1!!1" -- because it just isn't that kind of movie. It isn't about spectacular shots and jaw-dropping action set-pieces. It's a given that a Batman movie has those, and this one has its share.

But this is film is not about superheroes and water-cooler moments. It's a crime thriller -- a psychodrama, a detective story -- that happens to have jaw-dropping action set-pieces. Even that meager attempt at categorizing this thing falls hopelessly short of the mark. One word that comes to mind is "immersive". For 2 1/2 hours you enter the world of Gotham City, and it seems utterly real.

The plot -- about banking and corruption and chaos and fear -- is complex but readily intelligible. The surprises, the twists and turns, are numerous, especially in the second half. The amazing thing is you do not see these surprises coming. It isn't like most films, especially superhero films, in which this incredibly obvious thing is being set up, and then -- yep, thought so! -- it comes to pass. Even Iron Man, as entertaining and well-made as that movie is, suffers from this problem of forecasting itself in really broad and cliched ways.

But in TDK -- hey! -- it's anyone's guess as to where this film is going, much less how it's going to end. "How can they possibly resolve this?" I kept asking myself. "What's the way out of this mess?" And then the ending is so note-perfect, so beautifully right, that I wonder why I didn't see it. Of course it would end that way! How could a movie called The Dark Knight end any other way? It almost made me cry it was so brilliant.

This film represents everything I love about the character -- from light humor to the depths of an angry soul -- and treats the material with intelligence, and a degree of verisimilitude, that have never been attained in a so-called superhero movie. Batman Begins came closer to the ideal of smart, articulate realism than any film of its kind before it, and now this one has excelled even that highwater mark.

When it was over, at 2:45 in the morning, my wife turned to me, bright-eyed and said "That was amazing! I want to see it again!" Truer words have never been spoken.

It is truly an awesome movie. All those things we say would make a superhero movie better (staying true to the characters, not letting the action overshadow everything)? This movie is right on target.

Stellar performances by all the cast. And yes, Heath Ledger gives a legendary performance. You can see the underpinnings of the Killing Joke in this movie and Ledger digs into all the potential the Joker has as a character.

Just a brilliant, brilliant film. I plan to see it again on Saturday and I'm looking to it just as much as the first time. Maybe more.

I saw the Dark Knight @ Rave Motion Pictures in Chattanooga TN (East Ridge) at midnight last night and I must say as a comic book geek, here is my review, spoiler free.

The Dark Knight is not only the ultimate comic book adapted movie, it is not only the ultimate crime drama movie, it is not only the ultimate psychodrama movie, and it is not only the ultimate Batman movie. TDK is all of them rolled into one. It is the Ultimate Movie Period!!

All the established cast of actors did outstanding jobs. In particular, I was really impressed with Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two Face in both parts of his persoanlity. The studio did right hiding what Two Face looks like, so if you want to know, go see it. And as far as I'm concerned, the late Heath Ledger truly went out in a blaze of glory with his stand alone performance as the Joker. He truly deserves a posthumus Oscar Nomination. And as always, Christian Bale once again proves he is the best Batman. And with Bruce living in a Penthouse with a secret workshop for Batman reminds me not only of the Batman stories of the 1970's comics, but also the Mego Wayne Foundation Playset I had when I was 6 years old.
Everything about this movie was spectacular. I not only recommend one viewing, but more than one, it's that good!!!
                  Cheers.

Totally agree with you Vortigern 99. In fact, I wish I'd seen this thread before starting my own over in the comic book section. You nailed it.

I enjoyed the movie and am not a Ledger fan but that was an oscar performance. Two Face was excellent also.

I never even saw Ledger in this movie...it was the Joker the whole time. He was amazing. The movie kept me guessing, I never knew how it was going to end. The Joker is intense, and intelligent, and scary as heck on a real level. Not freddy Krueger scary, but too smart and too far ahead of the law scary. This is a Fantastic movie and one I can't wait to see again...maybe this weekend. I never see a movie twice in the theatres. Its going to be a looooong expectant wait for the next one. With out Ledger it will be tough to compare. He deserves the Oscar for his work. I hope he gets it.
