    "They're Here..."

I just experienced a monumental moment with my 7-year-old girl. She asked to watch her first scary movie (Mom is at work and hates horror flicks). What movie would you guys choose? No blood and guts, though -- she is only 7, and that wouldn't be too responsible. I picked Poltergeist: one of my all time favorites. I haven't watched it in a number of years, and I must say, it still ranks high. I love all of its elements: the foreshadowing, the supernatural themes, the different views on death, the ghosts, the frightening clown, the toys used as props including the Mego Hulk riding a horse in the kid's room, the special effects...
My daughter held onto me for the entire movie, and enjoyed screaming at parts. At the end, she asked to watch it again. What a moment!!! (Boy, am I dead tonight when my daughter climbs into bed with my wife and wakes her up because she's too scared to sleep alone.)
Well, what do you guys remember and like or dislike about Poltergeist? And, what movie would you have picked?

I loved Poltergeist, still do...will always be a classic.I guess what really freaks me out about that movie is all the real life tragic events that happened while the filming of the movie

I personally would've gone with the Exorcist like I did with my 6 year old nephew but he cracked up(He's a nut I guess )

But in your case,Poltergeist or the 6th sense would've been good picks

I think you picked out a good one! I absolutely hate blood and gore (I'm very squeamish! ) And I enjoyed watching Poltergeist. I just wish more scary movies were being made that didn't rely heavily on the gross stuff so I could enjoy being scared instead of being nauseated by it...

How about Saving Private Ryan. Oh wait, thats all blood and gore, sorry. Maybe The Omen (1st run) or Children of the Corn. Can't remember if they were particularly gory, but they scared the hell out of me, when I was younger. Also, M. Knight Shamalamadingdongs movies are kind of scary, with that whole 'whats hiding around the corner' thing. Just a thought. ...

Something Wicked This Way Comes would be a good entry level horror movie. Or any of the Universal Horror Classics. Poltergeist may be a bit much for my 6-year old, but your mileage varies.

Excellent choice.I enjoyed poltergeist as well. When my daughter reached the age of scary movie watching(wanting).I educated her with Romero's original B & W night of the living dead. She has been a zombie hound ever since...movies , comics , board games...
So be very careful of what you unleash...LOL and congrats my wife hates scary movies as well.My daughter and I watch them whenever we get a chance.
I will be going with the universal classics with my son.

I recently watched "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and really loved it! The underwater filming is amazing and the fact that it mostly takes place on that lagoon makes for a nice scary setting.

Loved the Day I put on the original Kong on the projector for the kids....1 minute into getting munchies for them in the kitchen screams of "Dad, somethings wrong with the projector!" came from the living room...of course it was in black and white and they thought the colour had gone....lol
Did the Universal monsters with them then the Hammer movies ..then moved up to Halloween....hardly any blood...but one scary suspense filled movie.

How about Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"? Does that constitute a horror film? There's only one gory part...

I think I would have chosen a B&W cheesy B movie. Something w/ creatures like Tarantula or The Blob. Something that looks fake, but suspenseful enough to a 7-yr.-old to have the desired effect, that probably won't induce nightmares.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

The Blob is a very good choice. Forgot about that one.
