Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer

Full trailer dropped at SDCC today...

at the very least, it looks like it will be an entertaining high fantasy series inspired by Tolkien. More than that, I will not be able to say until I have actually seen it.

      I'll be watching for sure.

I hope it isn't just a CGI fest... I know Amazon is dedicating a lot of money on this, but doesn't mean it will be good. Amazon's Wheel of Time had a lot of money spent on it as well, and it was a mess, so I'm hoping this trip back to Middle Earth will be a pleasant one.

I was so excited for and so disappointed by Wheel of Time, but apparently it did well enough they just greenlit a season 3 (it was initially greenlit for 2 seasons) and Season 3 will focus on Book 4: The Shadow Rising, so season 2 is going to rush through books 2 and 3 I guess. Not sure I will be there watching to find out though.

i will give S2 a shot. often the first season of a show is them finding their legs, so to speak. but they should have left all the identity politics out of it. is the season isn't better than i will not bother with S3.

what i see so far for the Rings of Power, it looks way better.

Hmmm wasn't there an active Rings of Power thread in Science Fiction? I'm very forgetful these days but I'm reasonably sure I've given it a peek a few times..

Anyway, I had been waiting for the show to fully drop before watching. I'm on E3 now and am enjoying it quite a bit. I think they've struck a nice balance between Jackson's LOTR and doing their own thing.

The writing has been surprisingly good, and of course it looks absolutely fantastic.

Very disappointing overall. Not only was the show unable to adhere to the established canon of its venerable source material (regardless of what facet of Tolkien's oeuvre they did and didn't have the rights to), but it also couldn't even remain consistent with its own scattershot and poorly conceived narrative on an episode to episode basis.

The canon Tolkien changed repeatedly through each draft and version of his story as needed to make for better storytelling (or would you prefer it still be Bingo instead of Frodo and Aragorn/Strider be a Hobbit named Trotter?) as he understood that is part of the storytelling process and how myths/stories evolved through each new telling for each new audience?

And what specifically did they not remain internally consistent with on an episode by episode basis? As I've watched it a few times now and saw nothing that would support that position.

Come on. The author making amendments to his own work until he arrives at a version which best reflects his intent and fulfills his own artistic vision is wholly different from the architects of a quasi-adaptation riding roughshod over the lore and bolting a bewildering array of disparate, incongruous elements onto the canon to try and give their own material some vague semblance of structure and merit.

Really? There were so many inconsistencies regarding plot elements, overall characterization and the motivations of the protagonists/antagonists in the show that it made me think the whole thing was written as a committee exercise checking story-beat boxes on the writing room's whiteboard rather than as an attempt to craft a well thought out, compelling and coherent tale.

But, I suppose that if everyone agreed with one another all the time, the world would be a rather boring place.
May the fans of TROP enjoy season 2.

I didn't hate TROP, but I hoped for much more out of it than it was able to provide.

Not counting the terrible pacing, it seems every time someone steps out of a doorway or turns to leave or whatever we're met grand music being played to indicate how important whatever scene being put on display is supposed to be. That was tiresome and felt way to pushy as did much of the series. Oddly it seemed rushed, and too slow at the same time, which goes back to the pacing. The actors all seemed fine, no issues there, but all seemed like they were a diluted version of what they could have been. All of the elves seems like cosplay versions rather than the ethereal versions I was expecting. The Dwarves seemed ok, but overall the characters portrayed on the screen didn't jump out at me and seem very Tolkein'ish.

Much of the story was set up for big reveals, which really didn't reveal much, IMO.

I'm not going to not watch season 2, and I really wanted this to be better, but it was less than I had hoped. I'm glad others enjoyed it.

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power indeed took viewers on an epic journey, just not a well-attended one. Only 37 percent of domestic Prime Video subscribers who started the fantasy drama’s first season completed all eight episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show reportedly performed slightly better […]

I’m shocked too. I’m shocked even 1/3 of the audience stuck around to the end.
