    John Madden RIP

I cannot believe it! I just watched that special on Christmas -- "All Madden." Now, he is gone. Without a doubt, Pat Summerall and John Madden were the greatest NFL play commentators of all-time (there is no close second). What a legend! Every time I hear "BOOM" I always think of him. He was 85. What a voice -- what a presence. Gone, but never, ever forgotten!

Wow! Nobody has ever truly replaced Madden, as a coach, as a broadcaster, as a football icon. The man is Legend

Very sad news, definitely one of the best ever in the business. RIP John Madden.

Yes, as a duo, you are right. But individually, there has been two or three really good NFL play-by-play announcers that were really good too.

Al Michaels is up there, second only to Pat Summerall in terms of play by play man. Dick Enberg also comes to mind as well.

As far as color commentators goes, yes, John Madden had no rivals. Howard Cossell was good until he got really old and weird, and started talking nonsense.

              RIP, Mr Madden

Not being an NFL/football guy only knew him as their video game/sports guy for what seemed liked 100 years

Seemed liked a really nice guy

                RIP

John Madden was the winningest coach of all time. He was the NFL's best broadcaster. So many fans got into the game through his video game franchise. Any one of those things would make him a legend in the sport. The fact that he did all three really puts him in a category by himself.

I hope that the NFL comes up with a permanent way to honor him and his impact... something like renaming it the John Madden MVP Award or the John Madden Pro-Football Hall of Fame.
