Yankee Great Bobby Murcer loses Battle with Cancer

Former Yankee great Murcer dies at 62 | Yankees.com: News

With a heavy heart I just learned a little while ago that my first Baseball Idol Yankee great Bobby Murcer passed away at age 62. Bobby played in the darkest era of Yankee baseball and was the bright star in the early 70's. He was traded at the end of the 74 season for Bobby Bonds which broke my heart. He returned to the Yankees during the 79 season the year Yankee Captain Thurman Munson died tragically in a plane crash.

Bobby retired during the 83 season to make room for rookie Don mattingly and had a great career as a Yankee broadcaster.... Today a part of my childhood has died also......I'll miss Bobby Ray Murcer.

Bobby Murcer was one of my childhood heroes. I actually got the chance to meet him in 1988 and he was one of the nicest people that I ever had the honor of meeting. I will always miss him.

Murcer and Munson were best friends and Bobby delivered one of the eulogies at Thurman's funeral. That evening the Yankees played Baltimore.

Billy Martin asked Murcer if he wanted to sit out due to the emotional toll Thurman's death had on him. No way was he sitting out. He wanted to play for Thurman. The Yankees beat the Orioles 5-4 and Bobby homered and drove in all 5 Yankee runs.

Growing up in Oklahoma, I was a Bobby Murcer fan because he was from here. A lot of good ball players were from Oklahoma including Mickey Mantle who Murcer replaced, but nobody was as loved here as Bobby Murcer because he continued to make Oklahoma his home.

Thurman Munson was the first person I did not know that I cried for because they died. I remember hearing the news and being in shock. Seeing Bobby cry put me over the edge. RIP Bobby, and tell Thurman we miss him.

I cried for days after learning about Munson's death. I cried most of the day yesterday upon learning of Murcer's death. I kept my tv on the YES network and felt at peace with watching my heroes during happier times.

Yup! remember that game like it was yesterday. Monday night game...Yanks were still somewhat in it but trailed the Orioles at the time. Although I never really thought the Yanks were going to catch them that year. Baltimore had a really good team and I thought they were going to win the Series....but the Pirates had something to say about that.

One of my happiest moments came when the Yanks were about to play the Bluejays and Phil Rizzuto announced before the game started that an old friend has come home it was Bobby Murcer. I think I leaped a mile in the sky and shouted with joy that he had been reaquired. Of course he wasn't the same player he once was but I didn't care.

I really cried all afternoon yesterday very emotional for me. I actually calmed down when I came on the boards and read some posts that made me laugh........
