Anybody else a fan of S--- On A Shingle ?

    Creamed chipped beef on toast

My local diner went out of business --(became a Dunkin Donuts) -- hoo-rah, another Dunkin Donuts clone.

Back in the day ---my diner was the best source for S--- On A Shingle

Today, only Stouffers (frozen dinners) are barely keeping this dish alive.

Remembering,,,,,,,,,,, creamed chipped beef on a buttered toasted Kaiser roll with 2 over-easy eggs on top... (note: eggs must be runny)

      THAT --- was heaven

My pops still loves SOS. He doesn’t do the eggs though.
Is it a military dish or something?

I can't remember the last time I had it. But that is some good stuff. And I believe it is still on the Cracker Barrel menu.

Probably my favorite thing my mom used to make. Haven’t had it since childhood.

Always wondered what the white sauce was …

              It's not sawmill/country gravy

If anything more like old fashioned chicken croquette sauce ….

Chicken croquettes …….. man I miss them too !!!

Since WWI, and my dad still says he can taste its vile horribleness from serving during Vietnam.

I had no idea it was being served to American soldiers in Vietnam (thought it was just a WW2 thing) ...BTW… (moment of silence for our brave manytimes-unsung heroes in Vietnam)

I had it for the first time at work 5-10 years ago. It was really good, but I don't know what the seasoning was. Most recipes seem to be salt, pepper & a little cayenne, but this also had nutmeg, or something. I miss that.

A good white sauce will always have nutmeg in it.

Might depend on who cooked it. My grandfather was a cook during WWII and he would make it from time to time. It wasn't all that bad.

^^ No doubt. I think he felt most of the food on base was mediocre to bad, but apparently the SOS wreaked havoc on everyone's stomach once a month.

Of course in the 21st C. you can get it at Michelin Star restaurants.

It think it all comes down to if you like corned beef or not.

Personally, i'm a fan --- especially in hash form (with tiny cubed taters) and eggs for breakfast.

Never actually had corned beef and cabbage but am a fan of both so guessing I would love it.

                            Gotta try that sometimes

I like corned beef hash, but the fat, saturated fat, and sodium are usually deal-breakers for me. Occasionally I'll have some with a sunny side up egg on top, and maybe an additional white. Trader Joe's used to sell a shelf-stable roast beef hash from Brazil that was both delicious and low fat. Of course they discontinued it to punish me.
