E.T. Is overrated. Yeah, it’s a good movie. It has a memorable soundtrack. It’s a movie that makes you say, awwwwww…

And yeah, it has Reese’s Pieces, phone home, and Elliot…

But it’s not even in my top 20 science-fiction list, let alone an all time list.

And yeah, Raiders should be higher, way higher…

AFI or any other critic list isn't the book of life. The birth of a nation was considered a top 50 film but has been removed for obvious reasons on updated lists. Tootsy is on the list and it wasn't anything above an average movie in its time.

Of those i'd say watch Jaws and Alien first. I remember liking Frankenstein and Wolfman more than Dracula and the Mummy.

I'll add almost all the Hammer films to my list. Which ones are considered the best ones?

I’ve seen D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation. The subject matter is obviously very questionable and shocking…but technically, a brilliant film in its day. I actually saw it twice in film school back in college (I was a Mass Communications major, but took a bunch of film classes too).

But yes, all lists are very subjective. Humans are not one collective like The Borg, lol.

Being an admittedly very fidgety person I never could sit through a full length silent movie.

Even couldn't get through Metropolis and Nosferatu.

                  Just too boring

I guess the best thing you can say about Birth of a Nation is that it is problematic. It was considered the first full length narrative film and it had what were considered technical merits for it's time. It just has the misfortune to be a racist piece of trash as well.

Just thinking, when Birth of a Nation was made (1915) I wasn't considered "white"

Just and Eastern European Slavic mongrel

Just hate to see modern Slav racists today buy into Nazi/KKK ideology

Do some research, these pigs used to hate YOU too.

I lay somewhere in the middle. History shouldn't be rewriten because we don't like it or because it isn't the standard now. At the same time History nerds should accept that the sky wasn't always bluer and its like looking at our younger selves before we could improve on our mistakes.

I have never watched The Godfather movies. Just had no desire to watch. The subject matter doesn't interest me, but I am aware of them through popular culture, and realize they are iconic because I see merchandise all over of them on T-shirts and posters.
I've seen some of those movies of AFI's top 100 list, and I think some are over-rated. For example, I know I watched Chinatown, but I don't remember much about it except Faye Dunaway was in it. I liked Faye's other movie, The Eyes of Laura Mars, much better and have seen it multiple times, so go figure.

This thread has taken an interesting turn… I'll offer that humanity is often highly skilled at regression (which should help us understand why history, and who writes it, is important), and that context really matters: https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/...ine-atrocities

…also, FFS, those privileged to be able to watch classic films should do so! If your cinema and/or world view begins in the late 20th or early 21st C., then you're really missing out on much. It's a big, strange, beautiful experience out there.
